In Pictures: An update from South Wales

Later this year (December is the current plan) South Wales will be the second location in the UK to introduce tram-trains. Although to start with they won’t be using the tram side of their abilities (that comes later when the first phase of Cardiff Crossrail is constructed – which could be by 2028) they are easily identifiable as tram-train vehicles, coming as they do from the same Citylink family as those operated on the South Yorkshire Supertram network.

Edinburgh Trams reaffirm their commitment to LRSSB safety campaign

Over the past few months we have seen a number of other tram and light rail systems across the UK sign-up to the “Two lines = STOP” safety campaign and now one of those which has been using it since the start have reaffirmed their commitment to improving safety around their network. Edinburgh Trams have given a new warning to anyone around their network about the dangers when crossing the tracks.

Another mural goes on display on the Metro

Over the years the Tyne and Wear Metro has been home to many different artworks – all part of the Art on Transport programme. And they are now being joined by a new colourful mural which takes inspiration from the classic westerns of 20th century cinema.

Girl tragically dies after being hit by a van

A 3 year old girl has tragically lost her life after she was hit by a van which had collided with a tram on Mosley Street in Manchester City Centre. The incident happened just before 1000 on Saturday 22nd February 2025 with the girl taken to hospital where she died from her injuries.

Brighton Tram 53 Society gets BBC News publicity

Across the UK there are many trams which are undergoing restoration – some of them are at high-profile locations such as Crich, Beamish and the East Anglia Transport Museum but others are being completed by smaller groups. One of the smaller groups who have been working hard on restoring their tram is the Brighton Tram 53 Society and they have recently been given a boost to publicity with a visit from local BBC News reporters.

Initial consultation shows strong support for West Yorkshire Mass Transit

Plans to bring trams to West Yorkshire have the support of more than two thirds of those who responded to the initial consultation into the construction of a Mass Transit scheme linking Leeds and Bradford. Support has come not just from the public but also from leaders in business and education.

In Pictures: York Place trackwork and closed stops

As we’ve already reported, for three days between Friday 14th February and Sunday 16th February essential engineering work took place at York Place in Edinburgh which meant a change in the service operated by the trams. New Metro train enters service on Sunderland line

First we had the very first new train enter service anywhere on the Tyne and Wear Metro network (18th December 2024) and now it has been announced that one of the Stadler built units has carried passengers on the Sunderland and Airport lines. 555 021 is the train which can tick off the Sunderland and Airport lines first – just like it could the rest of the network.
