Seaton Tramway’s 24 Hour Tramathon returns 5th-6th June 2021

One of the big highlights of the first part of 2020 was the Seaton Tramway’s fundraising Tramathon event culminating in a 24 hour continuous tram trip which was streamed online through all weathers. Details of the 2021 Tramathon have now been confirmed with the news that trams will again run for 24 hours – starting at 1200 on Saturday 5th June and running until 1200 on Sunday 6th June. And whereas 2020 was an online only experience this year you can buy tickets to take part in the knowledge you will also be helping to raise vital funds for the tramway!

Sandilands tram derailment inquest gets underway

The inquest into the deaths of seven people who died after a tram on the London Tramlink system a Sandilands derailed on 9th November 2016 has finally started after delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Coroner Sarah Ormond-Walshe swore in the jury on Monday 17th May with the first evidence due to be heard from Tuesday 18th May. It is expected that the inquest will last for three months with the families of those who tragically lost their lives hoping for answers as to why they died during the derailment.

First new bridge in place for Metro Brierley Hill extension

Up until recently a lot of work which has taken place so far on the Wednesbury to Brierley Hill extension of the West Midlands Metro has been demolition but local leaders are now celebrating after the installation of the first new structure on the line – a bridge over the Walsall Canal.

Metrolink weekend engineering works overrun

This article has been updated since original publication and also now includes photos.

Over running engineering work at Cornbrook caused major disruption for Manchester Metrolink on Monday 17th May with no trams able to run through the area for most of the day. With engineers on scene throughout the day trams were able to start running through Cornbrook shortly after 1800, although delays remained while the service reformed.

With two periods worth of stats released as part of the latest Manchester Metrolink performance figures it would be fair to say there is a fluctuating picture for anyone who has been travelling on the network as it very much up one period, down the other, then up again! In Pictures: In the Workshops at Crich

We’ve reported a lot over the past few weeks about the restorations at Crich coming toward an end and now we get the chance to look around the Workshops just to see what progress has been made on the three major projects at the moment – London Transport 1622, Newcastle 102 and London County Council 1. As well as those three trams we also see a tram being shunted towards the Workshop for a hoped for commissioning although in the event it has ended up being sidelined. Peter Whiteley provides us with these images.

Blackpool Tramway suspended north of Thornton Gate after collision with van

Services on the Blackpool Tramway were suspended between Thornton Gate and Fleetwood Ferry for a time on the morning of Tuesday 11th May after a van and tram collided close to the stop at Rossall Square. The collision happened shortly after 0920 with services suspended for a couple of hours while the emergency services were on the scene.
