In Pictures: Blackpool extension overhead in place up to the terminus

We may not now be seeing major progress each day in the construction work for the Blackpool Tramway extension along Talbot Road but that doesn’t mean nothing is happening as there has still been some significant work taking place over the past few days as shown in this latest photographic update from Tony Armitage.

In Pictures: Saltburn Cliff Lift

Originally opening in 1884 the Saltburn Cliff Lift is the oldest water balanced funicular which is still operational in Great Britain. It links the town of Saltburn with the only pleasure pier on the whole North East and Yorkshire coast with a journey from top to bottom taking just short of a minute. As with many other cliff lifts in the UK it considers itself a tramway and is known as the Saltburn Cliff Tramway on official literature. It has undergone much renovation over the years the latest of which came in 2017/18 when £400,000 was invested into a major refurbishment. But these photos come before that refurb with Keith Chadbourne paying a visit in August 2014.

After understandably not making an appearance in 2020 – Covid restrictions obviously meant they weren’t allowed into Scotland! – the Edinburgh Trams reindeer are back for the festive season in 2021! The names of all nine of Santa’s reindeer will be seen on the Scottish capital’s trams, including the mock-up at Edinburgh Airport, and the trams will also have antlers too!

In Pictures: Safety measures continue to go in at Bilston Central

Whilst services on the West Midlands Metro continue to be suspended as a result of the cracks on the trams (the at least four weeks timeframe comes to an end this coming weekend) the chance to undertake other works on the line is being taken. We saw last month that there had been track relaying around Bilston Central and since this was completed further work has been taking place to finish it all off.

In Pictures: Let it Snow – Tyne & Wear Metro edition!

Weather wise the end of November’s “highlight” was the high winds of Storm Arwen but at the same time there was also some snowfall in various parts of the UK. One system which was affected was the Tyne and Wear Metro and after repairs were made to various parts of the system it gave the opportunity to capture some images of the network in the snow – and that’s exactly what Trevor Hall did!

They Ran in 2021: Sunderland 16

Our third returning photo series for December is “They Ran in 2021” (granted this exact series hasn’t run before but its the same premise as “They Ran in 2020”, just that the year has changed!). Over the next month we will take a look at some of the heritage trams across the British Isles which have run over the past year. Its by no means a complete list (and isn’t intended to be) of everything which has run but allows us to celebrate a few of those trams (and if they feature in “15 Years Apart” they don’t feature in this series). We kick it off by heading to Beamish.

Free bus travel to be funded for under 22s in Scotland from January – Edinburgh Trams to be excluded

There are concerns in Scotland that the introduction of free bus travel for those under 22 from January 2022 will have adverse implications on passenger numbers on both Edinburgh Trams and the Glasgow Subway. In a similar funding package to the concessionary travel scheme, the Scottish Government have confirmed that it covers only buses with it the responsibility of local authorities if they wish to extend to other transport modes.
