In Pictures: More tracklaying progress in Edinburgh

The old and the new are now connected in Edinburgh with the tracklaying on the Trams to Newhaven project now having reached the rail in York Place of what we can now call the first phase of the Edinburgh Trams network. This significant milestone means that there are now just a few sections where the track still need to be laid as we continue to look ahead to spring 2023 and the opening of the extension.

Crich closes over safety concerns

The Crich Tramway Village – home of the National Tramway Museum – has closed its doors until at least Friday of this week it has been announced. The decision comes as a result of safety concerns around the depot fan which now require further investigations before presumably a repair plan can be put into place ahead of an eventual reopening.

Buses to return to Birmingham’s Broad Street in June – but what about the trams?

Bus services are due to return to Broad Street – Birmingham’s “golden mile” – in June it has been confirmed. The news comes after the successful completion of successful infrastructure tests which took place in early May. It may be good news for bus travellers but there is no date set for the start of tram services on Phase Two of the Birmingham Westside extension, but then there’s still no date for any trams to run again on the network so that’s hardly a surprise.

Seaton Tramway’s Tramathon fundraiser back for 2022!

Tramathon will be back at the Seaton Tramway on Saturday 2nd July! Originally conceived to help raise funds during 2020 and the start of Covid restrictions, the fundraiser has taken place for two years since with trams running for a full 24 hours and being live streamed on Facebook so everyone could take part even if they couldn’t get down to Devon. The 2022 event will be slightly tweaked as instead of a 24 hour event it will just be 12 hours worth of tram action although that is still plenty of time to pack a lot in!

In Pictures: Driver familiarisation continues on West Midlands Metro

We’ve been bemoaning the apparent lack of any form of tram movement on the West Midlands Metro in recent weeks – with a target of reopening by the end of May we had expected there to be some runs to keep driver competency up and also to test any repaired trams – but the last few days have started to see a few movements with Urbos 100 trams being used. Its thought that these runs are no more than driver familiarisation and are not running the full length of the tramway.

Minor Supertram timetable changes in May

There will be further timetable changes on Stagecoach Supertram from May (15th May for the Tram-Train, 29th May for everything else) in a bid to improve reliability. Its nothing major and it won’t see any changes to frequencies of any route but it does mean tram times at various stops will be slightly different.

In Pictures: Edinburgh Trams 272 goes back to The Royal Highland Show

In what is only the second new advert of 2022 to be stuck onto an Edinburgh tram, 272 has returned to a previous sponsor in receiving vinyls for this year’s Royal Highland Show. In the usual format (full height on sections 3 and 5, above windows on the other sections) this advert urges you to “get back into the saddle” as well as being “200 years in the making”.

In Pictures: Blackpool Tramway celebrates the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

It probably hasn’t escaped your notice but at the start of June there is an extra Bank Holiday as the country celebrates the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This rare (its almost impossible that anyone reading this will see another Platinum Jubilee in their lifetime) occasion will see a number of events taking place across the country and we also fully expect there to be a number of special liveries on trams and other public transport vehicles across the UK as everyone rushes to mark the occasion. The first tramway off the mark with their own special vinyls is the Blackpool Tramway – although it’s a little of an underwhelming effort.
