New signalling technology to be installed at Gosforth Depot

The Tyne and Wear Metro is set to benefit from new state of the art signalling technology at Gosforth Depot as part of the continued upgrade of the facility by Stadler and VolkerFitzpatrick. New digital signalling systems are to be installed with staff also due to move into a modern new control room overlooking the depot site to safely manage train access to and from the mainline.

In Pictures: Sunshine and trams end the May Half Term holidays at Beamish

Beamish in the sun what’s not to like? Obviously Beamish is a good day out whatever the weather but a little bit of warm sunshine adds that something extra to the experience and also often brings out the open top trams as everyone wants a ride on top. The last Saturday of the May Half Term school holidays saw the sun make an appearance along with a three tram service including Sunderland 16, Blackpool 31 and Newcastle 114. Trevor Hall also made an appearance on that day.

DLR extension to Thamesmead to progress to next stage

Proposals to extend the Docklands Light Railway from Gallions Reach to Thamesmead via Beckton Riverside are to be progressed to the next stage by Transport for London with the aim of boosting connectivity and providing new journey options for east London. The extension is one part of the proposals for the area which also includes improved bus services.

In Pictures: 27 enters service on West Midlands Metro

One tram on the West Midlands Metro which we haven’t pictured since it re-entered service is 27 so let us remedy that now! We had previously seen that it had been used on driver training but not long after that it was carrying passengers with its first recorded use being on 19th May 2023.

New baby centred art project to be showcased on the Tyne and Wear Metro

“The Teddy Bear Cabinet: Please Mind the Gap” is a new series of artworks which is being showcased on the Tyne and Wear Metro. Aimed to provide thoughtful tips and information for new parents the artwork will be on Metro trains during Infant Mental Health Awareness Week (12th to 18th June).

Edinburgh Council set to turn attention away from Newbridge extension

Plans for an extension of the Edinburgh Trams network to Newbridge are set to be abandoned following a report released to the Transport and Environment Committee recommended that there are better options in the west of the city. The route of this extension had been safeguarded in the local transport plan but after further investigations it has been said that it doesn’t bring all the benefits of other proposals to extend the tramway.

Revised NET engineering works: 17th & 18th June

It had already been planned that there would be no trams on the Phoenix Park branch over the weekend of Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th June but following the incident at Bulwell earlier in the week more works are now required on the Hucknall line which now means no trams will run between Highbury Vale and Hucknall all weekend.

Heaton Park go Tramtastic again – and its soon!

The Heaton Park Tramway have announced details of their latest special event with Tramtastic returning again – and this year it has returned to a one day event with it being held on Saturday 8th July 2023 so there’s not much time to wait for another action packed day at the tramway which will feature all five operational trams in action including the very first four car service!

Extra enhanced Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours for Fleetwood Tram Sunday weekend

Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours have announced that they will be running an enhanced timetable of tours over the weekend of Fleetwood Tram Sunday (Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th July). The timetable for the Saturday of the weekend has already been revealed and is the standard Enhanced Weekend timetable with more details of the Sunday to follow.

Can You Help identify finial?

We have been contacted in regards to a finial which was purchased several years ago and was sold at the time as being from the Swansea & Mumbles Railway. However, its believed that this is incorrect and after investigations it has been suggested it is either public utility or tram. There are no distinguishing features on the item which is currently painted white. Can anyone help identify the item?

In Pictures: Sheffield 264 returns to action at Beamish

For the past couple of months, Beamish have been coping with just four trams available for service after the temporary withdrawal of Sheffield 264 with a motor problem. With the motor back at Beamish and refitted to the tram, 264 is now back in service boosting the tram fleet just as the weather improves and everyone seems to descend on the museum especially following the opening of more buildings in the 1950s town.

In Pictures: Burton & Ashby 14 back out at Statfold Barn again

Burton & Ashby 14 is without doubt one of the biggest success stories of tram preservation in the UK in recent years. Repatriated from Detroit in 2015 having been there since 1980, the tram was restored at the Statfold Barn Railway returning to service in March 2017 – the first time it had carried passengers in the UK in 90 years! Since then it has continued to run regularly at Statfold Barn and the most recent of this outings was during the Spectacle of Steam which took place over the weekend of Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th 2023. Ken Jones was there to see the tram – and plenty of steam locos – in action.

More details announced for Dudley’s new transport interchange

Work could start this winter on the construction of a new transport interchange in Dudley it has been revealed. The £24 million facility will provide an interchange between buses and trams, making it far easier for locals to change between the two modes and opening up many new journey opportunities.

In Pictures: Now 56 enters service on West Midlands Metro

What, more changes on the West Midlands Metro?! Yes, another tram has entered service for the very first time on the network with Urbos100 56 being spotted in action on Monday 12th June 2023. This is the 15th of the Urbos100 to have been used in service so far and with another two already at Wednesbury is not likely to be too long before this number increases.

In Pictures: The Volk’s Electric Railway in the sunshine

As Brighton’s Volk’s Electric Railway runs right along the seafront between the Aquarium (by Palace Pier) to Black Rock (just shy of the Marina) its operation can be very much weather dependent. But there were no such worries on 20th May when two pairs of trains were running: 6+10 and 7+8.
