New team help to make travel easier in Blackpool

Customer experience is one of the buzzwords in all industries in the 21st century and public transport has been no different. To help improve the experience of customers (or passengers as they once were) Blackpool Transport have recently created a new team of customer assistants that have transformed tram and bus trips, offering quicker boarding and face-to-face travel advice as part of an enhanced customer experience.

TfGM start procurement for new Metrolink infrastructure contract

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has started a procurement process which will deliver an up to £1.6 billion investment into the infrastructure of Manchester Metrolink. The new contract will cover Metrolink’s asset renewals programme, and could also include other improvement works.

Consultation for next stage of Edinburgh Trams to launch 25th August 2025

The City of Edinburgh Council have confirmed that the 12-week consultation into plans for the proposed North-South tramline will launch from 25th August 2025 on their online consultation hub. Originally expected to start in the spring, it was announced in March that it would be delayed until August so that it wasn’t taking place during the school summer holidays and political recess.

Residents claim Metro extension works cause damage to their gardens

Residents living in Middle Meadow close to Horseley Road in Tipton have claimed that the ongoing West Midlands Metro construction works have caused damage to their gardens. Video footage shows large cracks in a number of gardens with the claim being that the construction of the Black Country line is the cause.

In Pictures: Supertram trackworks move to Middlewood

After a gap of one day, there are more trackworks taking place on the South Yorkshire Supertram network with a section of line along Middlewood Road being replaced. This is all part of the continued investment in the network by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) and will be the last set of work due to take place this summer.

The recent Blackpool Airshow may have resulted in a split service running on the Blackpool Tramway but that didn’t stop it being the busiest weekend of the year for the trams with over 50,000 trips recorded over both days.

In Pictures: HMS Blackpool and Balloon 717 moved into Rigby Road workshop

With Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours currently looking at a phased reintroduction, with Illumination Tours due to start in October 2025 in time for Lightpool, a start has been made on the first part of the work needed. This has necessitated a move around of exhibits in the Exhibition part of Tramtown at Rigby Road Depot (the former Fitting Shop) which also doubles as the workshop.

Wednesbury tram depot expansion costs increase

The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) have agreed to provide additional funding for the expansion of the West Midlands Metro depot at Wednesbury. Costs have gone up by more than £7.65 million to £76 million.

Collisions on NET leads the latest operational report

Its been six months since the Greater Nottingham Light Rail Transit Authority last met and in that time there seem to have been plenty of collisions between trams and other road vehicles, majorly impacting the ability of the network to operate the normal timetable. This led to a temporary timetable running on the network with a lower frequency (now withdrawn) and the latest operational report gives more details of the collisions which have necessitated this.

Telford Town Tramway to be officially reopened on 24th August

Telford Town Tramway at the Telford Steam Railway will be officially reopened by Tim Dunn, historian and television presenter, on Sunday 24th August during the railway’s 1940s Weekend. The 2 foot gauge tramway – operated by a steam tram loco and carriage – has been out of action since 2019 but after a major restoration of the loco it is now ready to operate once again.

NET to return to more regular frequencies

Nottingham Express Transit are planning to reintroduce their higher frequency timetable from the start of service on Wednesday 20th August 2025. NET had been running a temporary timetable since 25th June 2025 as a result of a shortage of trams but with sufficient repairs having been made to the fleet it is now possible to reintroduce the full service once again.

Major events to impact Metro services on 22nd August

Anyone planning to use the Tyne and Wear Metro on Friday 22nd August is being advised to allow extra time for their journeys and to plan ahead with a number of major events taking place in Newcastle and Sunderland. These will lead to Metro trains being busier than usual and crowd control measures will be in place to manage queues, including temporary station closures at West Jesmond and Ilford Road from 1500.
