555 008 enters service on the Tyne and Wear Metro

555 008 has become the latest of the new Stadler trains to have entered service on the Tyne and Wear Metro. Having been used on testing and driver training it was cleared for passenger use in June and formed its first revenue earning services on 27th June 2025.

More details announced for planned return of Blackpool’s heritage trams

Blackpool Transport have released more details of their plans to return heritage trams to the Prom with the aim still being that they will be back in time for October Half-Term when the Lightpool Festival takes place.

BCIMO goes into administration

Black Country Innovative Manufacturing Organisation (BCIMO), the operators of Dudley’s Very Light Rail Innovation Centre, have gone into administration it has been confirmed. A not for profit organisation, the appointed administrators, RSM UK, said that the company had been hit by a lack of anticipated funding and rising costs leading to cash flow challenges.

More engineering works for Metrolink in August

As part of the continued investment in maintaining and improving the Manchester Metrolink another week long line closure has been announced for early August. This time the work will be taking place at Pomona and on the Eccles line which will affect trams on both the Trafford Park and Eccles lines.

In Pictures: Lucie works at Beamish

As was reported last month, Beamish currently has an unexpected and unusual visitor – Lucie, a steam train engine which originally operated in Belgium. Having already been seen at other railways and museums in the northeast it arrived at Beamish following an appearance at Shildon’s Locomotion in early June and the main purpose of its visit was to be used during the “A Collier’s Life: At Work & Play” event which took place on 5th and 6th July 2025.

Tyne and Wear Metro August line closure

No services will run between Hebburn and South Shields on the Tyne and Wear Metro for five days during August to allow the installation of new overhead wires, as part of the continued investment in maintaining and upgrading the network’s infrastructure. The planned closure will be in place from Monday 4th to Friday 8th August.

We start a new photographic series today with a new theme: “Side by Side”. The concept of this theme is simple, it will feature photos of trams side-by-side (yes we are struggling for new themes, but you try coming up with new ideas after 23 years!) whether that be a posed photo opportunity or just in normal service. In Pictures: The Armley Corporation Tramways arrive at Beamish

Over the years Beamish has been a regular location for filming. Whether it be the latest drama or a documentary, film crews have enjoyed the period setting which is ideal to give their production a bit more realism. Much of this filming has taken place when the museum has been closed and so no-one is any the wiser but recently a new filming assignment has seen people in period clothing on site during opening hours. And that’s not all as two trams in the fleet have received new temporary identities.

Bee Network announce transport plans for Oasis concerts

You may have heard but this summer sees comeback concerts by Oasis at various places across the UK. This will include both Edinburgh and Manchester where trams will play a major role in transporting people to attend the gigs. To this end the Bee Network have announced their plans for transport, including a revised tram service to give the highest capacity possible on the Bury line.

Small fare change on NET

Monday 7th July marks the introduction of new fares on Nottingham Express Transit following their annual fees review and it has been announced that there will just be a small change to Short Hop tram tickets purchased from ticket machines – with no other fares set to increase.

West Midlands Metro extend offer for discounted travel to hospital

After a three month trial period, West Midlands Metro have confirmed that a 15% discount for patients and their families who have to go to Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital will be extended for a further three months.

NET 232 returns to service

Nottingham Express Transit Citadis 232 has returned to service – after over two years out of use. The tram was back in service by Thursday 3rd July 2025 following the completion of repairs and full commissioning.
