Work continues on Gateshead 10 at Beamish

The long-running overhaul of Gateshead 10 at Beamish is continuing with further progress being made as the tram edges ever closer to returning to service – for the first since 2016.

The latest update in the Beamish Transport and Engineering Diary says that a project progress meeting was held in July to review the work and to see if they are any challenges ahead as they work hard to bring the tram back into service.

Recent progress has seen work start on the overhaul of handbrake components whilst there is has also been attention to its glazing. This will include the fitting of safety glass on all forward facing windows and a contractor will also be coming to put bomb-blast window coatings on the side windows.

It hasn’t just been Gateshead 10 which has seen attention recently either. Newcastle 114 – which is out of service for 2025 – has now received some more yellow paint as part of the work which should see it back out in 2026.

The two trams mentioned in this article are seen in this photo. At the back is the main focus of the tram works at the moment, Gateshead 10 which remains lifted awaiting its overhauled bogies. In front is Newcastle 114 which has recently seen more yellow paint added to its bodywork. (Photograph by Trevor Hall, 3rd August 2025)
