Blackpool Tramway records busiest weekend of the year

The recent Blackpool Airshow may have resulted in a split service running on the Blackpool Tramway but that didn’t stop it being the busiest weekend of the year for the trams with over 50,000 trips recorded over both days.

Taking place on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th August 2025, the Airshow resulted in large crowds visiting Blackpool. For safety reasons with the huge numbers on the Prom looking up to the skies for aircraft such as the Red Arrows no trams were able to run between Manchester Square and North Pier during for most of the day with a split service running, with extra services operated to help get the crowds where they wanted to go.

Its also reported that the Blackpool Tramway is on track for a record-breaking summer, thanks to excellent weather, a series of high-profile events and a renewed focus on customer service.

Jamie Swift, Head of Service Delivery at Blackpool Transport, said: “Since last year’s opening of the extension to Blackpool North Station last year, and the more recent introduction of an enhanced timetable, we’ve really seen patronage numbers take off. Now they are reaching new heights, and the popularity of the tram during the air show reflects our commitment to shaping services to the needs of both visitors and local residents.

“The weather is also playing its part in what promises to be a bumper season for one of the country’s most popular seaside towns, and by continually listening to customers and investing in service improvements, we’re set to record our best customer numbers for many years.”
