Steampunk returns to Crich this September

The Steampunk weekend at the Crich Tramway Village has become one of the most popular events at the museum in recent years and it will return again on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th September. Organised in conjunction with Steampunks Always Welcome – Lincoln the weekend sees alternative history celebrated and of course the trams will keep on running too.

Car and tram collision on Ashton line

Manchester Metrolink services were disrupted between Ashton-under-Lyne and Velopark for a time on Sunday 18th August after a car and tram collided close to The Snipe. The tram involved was 3083 which was bound for Ashton.

In Pictures: West Midlands Metro 44 back to fleet livery

Article updated 27th August with photo added.

The West Midlands Metro fleet has taken one further step towards having a more uniform look as another of the Urbos 100 trams which were carrying adverts is now back in full fleet livery. Coming just a couple of days after 58 went back to blue, 44 is now also running around in the standard fleet colours.

The Metro inspires a Geordie version of a classic country music song

A classic country music song has had a playful reworking by a local mandolin group. “I’ve been everywhere” has swapped its lyrics from being about a journey across North America for a ride on the Tyne and Wear Metro.

First phase of trackwork completed on Birmingham Eastside extension

Glasgow 488’s top deck moved for work to start on its restoration

A few days ago you may have read our report on the fact that Lowestoft 14 had broken cover briefly with images shown of it at Chapel Road terminus. It has now been confirmed that the tram was being moved out of the main depot, which houses the workshop, and the reason for that was to provide space for the top deck of Glasgow 488 to allow restoration to start.

In Pictures: KFC complete a hattrick of tram systems

Over the past couple of months we have seen identical adverts for KFC applied to trams on Manchester Metrolink and West Midlands Metro. Whilst those adverts have now gone – 3047 losing its vinyls in Manchester and 58 on the West Midlands Metro – there is a third tramway in the British Isles which does also have an advert for the same company, and that is Dublin’s Luas system.

Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner visits the Metro

Susan Dungworth, the new Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, has taken a trip on the Tyne and Wear Metro to see the police and security measures in place on the system. She travelled with police officers from the Northumbria Force and the Metro security team on the evening of Saturday 17th August before finishing off at the Metro Control Room.

In Pictures: Busy summer continues at Beamish

They’ve been described as the hardest working heritage trams in the UK and the operating fleet at Beamish is once again proving that with the museum continuing to be very busy with visitors (long queues to get in, announcements that the car park is full being regular occurrences). Whilst the trams do now have support from buses, as the museum continues to evolve, they are still running on all opening days on both the clockwise and anti clockwise circuits. This article provides a brief update on what is going on with the trams as well as taking a look at doing what they do. Photos from Trevor Hall.

In Pictures: Supertram improvement works carry on

The major improvement work currently taking place on South Yorkshire Supertram – a total of £5 million has been invested by he South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority  since they took control of the network again in March 2024 – is moving along Middlewood Road with the latest location of works being at Leppings Lane tramstop. That work is shown in these photos taken by Stuart Cooke.

Piccadilly Gardens next location for Metrolink engineering works

The summer of Manchester Metrolink improvement works will continue for three weeks from Tuesday 27th August. The next location for works to take place will be at Piccadilly Gardens meaning no trams will be able to run from there to St Peter’s Square.
