Blackpool 619 to be officially launched back into service 26th March

Shortly before Christmas 2022 a tram returned to service at Manchester’s Heaton Park Tramway which hadn’t been used since 2017. Blackpool Replica Vanguard 619 was a surprise return to service during the Lightopia event but with its re-entry happening with no fanfare it is now planned for it to have an official relaunch with this set to take place on Sunday 26th March.

In Pictures: Supertram Middlewood shuttle

If you’ve been concentrating on the news page this week you will have seen that there has been disruption for Stagecoach Supertram services between the city centre and Middlewood/Malin Bridge. It all started on Monday 6th February when Citylink 399 207 was declared a failure on West Street and following its rescue back to depot the line remained closed with track repairs required.

Southport Pier Tramway tracks to be removed

The tracks once used by the Southport Pier Tramway are to be removed – some ten years since the tram last ran along the Pier. Despite the fact that the tram was suspended in 2013 the rails have been left in place but now with the decking being relaid the chance is being taken to remove them once and for all.

Isle of Man timetables and operating dates confirmed for 2023

Full timetables and operating dates for the four railways and tramways operated by Isle of Man Transport have now been confirmed. It will be a special year on the island as the Steam Railway (granted not in our remit) is celebrating 150 years of operation and the Manx Electric Railway (definitely in our remit!) reaches 130 years – plus it will be the first full season of running for the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway since 2019 (although still on a reduced length of line).

Tram breakdown leads to severe Supertram disruption

This article has been revised since original publication. Last update was Tuesday 7th February at 1945.

There has been severe disruption to services on Stagecoach Supertram since Monday 6th February after a tram broke down on West Street which also caused damage to the track. No trams were initially able to run between Cathedral and Shalesmoor from around 0830 until the end of service of Monday 6th February before a limited shuttle service was introduced between University and Middlewood on Tuesday 7th February.

Final stage of Wolverhampton extension works to start

Whisper it quietly but there could be an end in sight for construction work on the short West Midlands Metro extension to Wolverhampton Railway Station. Midland Metro Alliance – who are in charge of all construction for WMM extensions – have confirmed that the final stage of works will get underway from Monday 6th February, and that it should only take up to eight weeks to be finished. And then after that? The first trams should be able to start testing on the route! No timeline for that one yet though.

Leith Walk to see two traffic again as overhead set to go live mid-February

Things that we like to see – good progress for trams to return to Leith Walk as the Trams to Newhaven project continues ahead of an expected public opening in the spring. The City of Edinburgh Council have announced that two-way traffic will return to Leith Walk this February and that the overhead will be fully electrified shortly afterwards.

Blackpool Tramway engineering works: February 2023

There will be essential maintenance taking place on the Blackpool Tramway this February which will mean that no trams will run after 2000 during the week for a two week period. Although the works are due to take place between Cabin and Tower, there will be no trams running along the entire length of the tramway during the work.

Crich getting ready for the new season

Last night we brought you an update from winter maintenance at the Seaton Tramway and tonight we turn our attention to the Crich Tramway Village where they too are getting ready for a new operating season. The workshop team have been busy on readying various trams for a return to action whilst out on the mainline there has been attention to the all important infrastructure.
