As we reported a few weeks ago, fares on the West Midlands Metro will be increasing from 2nd January 2026. This comes after a comprehensive fares review and is to help meet increased running costs.
Michael Reading-Skilton, Metro’s Head of Commercial, said: “The decision to increase fares is never taken lightly, but these modest price rises will help us to meet increased running costs while ensuring the future sustainability of the Metro.
“The past few years have seen massive investment in the region’s tram network as we prepare to connect even more communities across Birmingham and the Black Country, and we would like to assure customers that revenue from ticket sales will continue to be reinvested into further service enhancements.”
The increase follows a freeze in ticket prices immediately after the pandemic and below inflation price rises since 2023.
Increases include:
- Adult single – £2.50 (up 20p)
- Adult Zone 1 Day – £3.60 (up 30p)
- Adult Zone 1 Dat off-peak – £3.50 (up 40p)
- Adult Zones 1-4 Day – £7.60 (up 70p)
- Adult Zones 1-4 Day off-peak – £5.90 (up 50p)
Michael added: “The tram continues to offer excellent value for money when compared to other modes of transport. Furthermore, nearly one in five people who use the tram with a concessionary pass will be unaffected by these changes.”
