Planned operating fleet at Crich for 2023 confirmed

At least 17 passenger trams and four works cars are set to be commissioned for service at the Crich Tramway Village this year. This will include three trams planned to return to service having not been used in 2022 – and subject to testing more trams may return to service later in the year.

Prices to increase on Edinburgh Trams

Ticket prices on Edinburgh Trams will increase for the first time in around three years from Sunday 2nd April. All tickets will be affected by the increase and is in line with similar changes being introduced by Lothian Buses.

In Pictures: The trams at North East Land, Sea & Air Museums

The North East Land, Sea and Air Museums in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear is home to a collection of trams – many of which come from Blackpool having been sold following the tramway upgrade in 2011. In addition to a Centenary Car, Twin Set and Balloon Car the museum also houses a tram from Graz and one from Krefeld with all vehicles in undercover storage. In this pictorial article we take a look at some of the trams in November 2022.

Macmillan Cancer Support named West Midlands Metro Charity of the Year 2023

Staff at the West Midlands Metro have voted for Macmillan Cancer Support to be their charity of the year for 2023 which means their fundraising efforts will be concentrated towards the organisation. This announcement comes just a few weeks after it was confirmed that the 2022 Charity of the Year, Compton Care, had received over £1,000 in donations from the company.

DLR Beckton Depot to see improvement works

The main Docklands Light Railway Depot at Beckton is set to benefit from major improvements after confirmation that Morgan Sindall Infrastructure have been appointed to deliver them ahead of the full introduction of the new CAF trains. The works will include a new maintenance building and expanding stabling capacity provided at the facility.

Car ends up on tram tracks in Cleveleys

A driver has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving after their car ended up on the tramway at Cleveleys on Tuesday 28th February. The car was heading towards Blackpool when it ended up on the tracks between the Cleveleys and Anchorsholme Lane stops.

West Midlands Metro 39 named

There has been the first naming on the West Midlands Metro for over three years with 39 being named after local entrepreneur and philanthropist twins Roy and Don Richardson. As well as being the first naming since 28 received Jasper Carrot names on 13th November 2019 it is also the first of the Urbos100 trams to be named.

In Pictures: West Midlands Metro construction works at Wednesbury

We’ve made lots of mention of the West Midlands Metro extension to Dudley and Brierley Hill and how it leaves the current line at Wednesbury but haven’t featured much about the construction works at the near end of the extension. We remedy that here as we take a look at some of the construction works at Wednesbury which will see the installation of a new junction to take trams on the way to Dudley.

The new season at the Crich Tramway Village is creeping up on us (reopens Saturday 11th March) and in preparation for the reopening to the public there has been some shunting undertaken. This has seen John Bull return back to its home in the Great Exhibition Hall with a shunt for this to happen taking place on Saturday 25th February.

Wallasey 78 to help celebrate 100 years of Wallasey Corporation Transport

Sunday 9th April will see a special event taking place at the Wirral Transport Museum and Heritage Tramway as 100 years of Wallasey Corporation Transport is celebrated. Described as a “once in a lifetime special commemoration event” the day will see every surviving original Wallasey Corporation bus feature while the tram interest will be provided by Wallasey 78.

Nexus are to focus on investment which will boost commercial mobile network strength across the Tyne and Wear Metro as part of their new plans to improve digital connectivity. Research has shown that Metro customers want a better digital experience from when they walk from the street onto a station platform and right through their journey and that is now the aim of Nexus.

TfL confirm rolling stock replacement programme for Tramlink

If funding can be found it looks likely that the original fleet of trams built for the opening of the then Croydon Tramlink system will be replaced by new trams. The CR4000s were built by Bombardier in 1998/9 but declining reliability has led Transport for London to start to look for a replacement fleet.

First new train arrives at Gosforth Depot

As we mentioned at the weekend, the first of the new trains for the Tyne and Wear Metro has left Switzerland for its new life in the northeast and its now been confirmed that it has arrived at Gosforth Depot. Delivery took place in the early hours of Tuesday 28th February after the train undertook the final leg of its journey from Tyne Yard to Pelaw and then onto Gosforth.

Passenger numbers continue to increase on Metrolink

Its been a while since we’ve been able to say 100% when talking about passenger numbers not only on Manchester Metrolink but any UK tramway but that’s precisely what we can say about Metrolink – albeit only on certain days of the week. The latest “Metrolink Service Performance Report” has revealed that 100% of pre-pandemic passenger numbers are being seen at times on the network which has led to the overall weekly figure being up at 85%.
