In Pictures: West Midlands Metro construction works at Wednesbury

We’ve made lots of mention of the West Midlands Metro extension to Dudley and Brierley Hill and how it leaves the current line at Wednesbury but haven’t featured much about the construction works at the near end of the extension. We remedy that here as we take a look at some of the construction works at Wednesbury which will see the installation of a new junction to take trams on the way to Dudley.

The junction is being constructed just to the east of Wednesbury Great Western Street (the Birmingham side of the stop) and will includes access from trams coming from both Wolverhampton and Birmingham. At this stage it hasn’t been confirmed what the service pattern will be for trams running to Dudley when the line opens – scheduled to be in 2024.

This general view of the construction of the line at Wednesbury shows the proximity of it to the depot at Wednesbury. In the centre of the image was see the ramp which will take the tracks from current line to the alignment to Dudley.

A closer view of the new ramp being built.

In this shot we take a side view of the ramp.

This final view looks across towards the current Birmingham to Wolverhampton line with the overhead wires seen. (All Photographs by Andy Walters)
