In Pictures: Metrolink trackworks update

There is currently major trackwork taking place on Manchester Metrolink with a two month closure of the line between Piccadilly Gardens and Piccadilly. This is seeing new track laid in Piccadilly Gardens and on Aytoun Street, two areas which usually sees 20 trams every hour in each direction running. Public engagement events coming for Metro Merry Hill extension

With the main construction works on phase two of the Black Country line to Merry Hill set to start this summer, the Midland Metro Alliance have announced plans for a series of public engagement events to let everyone know what to expect during the forthcoming works. This extension of the West Midlands Metro is the largest current tramway extension project in the UK and during the work there will be changes to access at Merry Hill Shopping Centre as well as other localised traffic changes.

In Pictures: Latest from Birmingham Eastside extension

The West Midlands Metro network is currently the only UK tramway which is seeing any active extension/construction works taking place (although with recent government announcements that is something which should change in the next few years). There are two main projects with both the Birmingham Eastside and Black Country lines being built, and both will end up being two (or possibly three in the latter case) phase projects. In this article we head to the Birmingham Eastside line to see recent work around Albert Street.

Tributes paid to Geoffrey Claydon

Tributes have been paid across the tram and light rail sector to Geoffrey Claydon following his death at the age of 94. Geoffrey passed away on Monday 30th June after a short illness and had been a legal architect of modern heritage railway legislation and was a pivotal figure in the Tramway Museum Society.

In Pictures: Edinburgh Trams 267 receives Edinburgh Festival adverts

For the second year in a row the tram which had advertised the Royal Highland Show has seen those adverts by some for the Edinburgh Festival. Whereas last year it was 257 which swapped adverts to the Edinburgh International Book Festival, in 2025 it is 267 which changes and it is now carrying vinyls for the Edinburgh International Festival.

Operation Coastwatch back to tackle anti-social behaviour in North Tyneside

A joint scheme between Northumbria Police, North Tyneside Council and Tyne and Wear Metro operator Nexus is returning for the summer to help tackle anti-social behaviour on the North Tyneside coast. Operational Coastwatch has been used for a number of years and aims to address concerns around anti-social behaviour on the beaches and around transport hubs.

555 008 enters service on the Tyne and Wear Metro

555 008 has become the latest of the new Stadler trains to have entered service on the Tyne and Wear Metro. Having been used on testing and driver training it was cleared for passenger use in June and formed its first revenue earning services on 27th June 2025.

More details announced for planned return of Blackpool’s heritage trams

Blackpool Transport have released more details of their plans to return heritage trams to the Prom with the aim still being that they will be back in time for October Half-Term when the Lightpool Festival takes place.

BCIMO goes into administration

Black Country Innovative Manufacturing Organisation (BCIMO), the operators of Dudley’s Very Light Rail Innovation Centre, have gone into administration it has been confirmed. A not for profit organisation, the appointed administrators, RSM UK, said that the company had been hit by a lack of anticipated funding and rising costs leading to cash flow challenges.

More engineering works for Metrolink in August

As part of the continued investment in maintaining and improving the Manchester Metrolink another week long line closure has been announced for early August. This time the work will be taking place at Pomona and on the Eccles line which will affect trams on both the Trafford Park and Eccles lines.

In Pictures: Lucie works at Beamish

As was reported last month, Beamish currently has an unexpected and unusual visitor – Lucie, a steam train engine which originally operated in Belgium. Having already been seen at other railways and museums in the northeast it arrived at Beamish following an appearance at Shildon’s Locomotion in early June and the main purpose of its visit was to be used during the “A Collier’s Life: At Work & Play” event which took place on 5th and 6th July 2025.
