Car v Metrolink collision at Manchester Central leads to Metrolink changes

Wednesday 14th May saw Metrolink services running through central Manchester operating a revised service after a collision between a car and a tram at the bottom of the ramp leading to and from Deansgate-Castlefield outside the main entrance to Manchester Central.

The first online reports of the collision were made not long after 0900 and meant that no trams could run in the busy section of line through St Peter’s Square until around about 1015.

During this time the following service did run:

  • Ashton to Crumpsall
  • Rochdale to Exchange Square
  • Altrincham to Cornbrook
  • East Didsbury to Firswood
  • Manchester Airport to Firswood
  • Eccles to Cornbrook
  • Bury to Piccadilly

Once the accident had been cleared, normal services resumed albeit with minor delays.

  • Monday 12th May also saw disruption to services in Rochdale owing to a fire in a building on Drake Street. For around an hour and a half after 0900, services were unable to run Rochdale Railway Station-Rochdale Town Centre.
