We are back in Manchester for another edition of “Then & Now” as we see two pictures – one before Metrolink came along and the other once it was running.
As with last week’s image this is taken from the Town Hall Extension as we look towards the junction between Princess Street and Mosley Street – a junction which now sees trams head either way onto both 1CC and 2CC.

Its 1989 and Metrolink construction is not yet underway and presumably its winter as the trees have no leaves on them. The familiarly coloured orange Greater Manchester bus is just heading along Mosley Street and is crossing over the junction with Princess Street. Whilst a lot of the buildings and surroundings have changed we do at least have Manchester Art Gallery immediately above the bus which helps us to work out just where we are.

Onto 25th April 2025 and there are still lots of trees but spring has sprung which almost blocks our view of a tram in almost the same position as the bus in the previous image. Manchester Art Gallery can still be seen but other buildings have changed. In the foreground we see 2CC heading off to the left with the tram being on 1CC along Mosley Street.
