Final stage of Wolverhampton extension works to start

Whisper it quietly but there could be an end in sight for construction work on the short West Midlands Metro extension to Wolverhampton Railway Station. Midland Metro Alliance – who are in charge of all construction for WMM extensions – have confirmed that the final stage of works will get underway from Monday 6th February, and that it should only take up to eight weeks to be finished. And then after that? The first trams should be able to start testing on the route! No timeline for that one yet though.

Leith Walk to see two traffic again as overhead set to go live mid-February

Things that we like to see – good progress for trams to return to Leith Walk as the Trams to Newhaven project continues ahead of an expected public opening in the spring. The City of Edinburgh Council have announced that two-way traffic will return to Leith Walk this February and that the overhead will be fully electrified shortly afterwards.

Blackpool Tramway engineering works: February 2023

There will be essential maintenance taking place on the Blackpool Tramway this February which will mean that no trams will run after 2000 during the week for a two week period. Although the works are due to take place between Cabin and Tower, there will be no trams running along the entire length of the tramway during the work.

Pop app available to Apple users for first time – but only for real time updates

Apple smartphone users will have access to real-time Tyne and Wear Metro travel information for the first time after the upgrading of the Pop app – which now becomes the only official app for everything Metro related. For at least the time being Apple users will only be able to use it for travel information with the Pay as you Go functionality only available to Android users.

The Seaton Tramway only have a short period in the year without any trams running and whilst it may seem that is downtime for the staff it is very much busy with various maintenance tasks taking place. This includes both the infrastructure and the trams.

A third of single and day journeys on the Metro now made by a Pop card

Nexus have revealed that a third of all single and day journeys on the Tyne and Wear Metro are now being made by passengers using Pop Pay As You Go. This news comes after the start of an offer in January which sees single journeys capped at £2 when using Pop with more people than ever now taking advantage. The offer remains in place until March.

No decisions on funding for Glasgow metro and more Edinburgh tram extensions to come until spring

Michael Matheson, the Transport Secretary in the Scottish Government, has confirmed that decisions of funding for the proposed Glasgow Metro and more Edinburgh Trams extensions will not be made public until the spring as he needs to wait for the budget announcement. The two proposals are part of the Second Strategic Transport Projects Review (STPR2) and it has originally been planned that at the same time as that announcement a delivery plan would also be unveiled but this now won’t happen.

Edinburgh Council to vote on new transport plan

If you think you’ve read this before you probably have! It seems to be another case of a new report on previously announced plans but a vote is set to take place in the City of Edinburgh Council to approve various transport plans including one which looks at public transport in the area. This includes possible extensions alongside other improvements to the bus, tram and rail networks around Edinburgh.
