Snow hits the UK again

Just when you thought it was safe to put those winter woollies away comes the snow! And pretty heavy snow at that which has caused disruption for trams in the UK – Stagecoach Supertram had to run a revised service on Friday 10th March whilst the Crich Tramway Village announced that their planned opening on Saturday 11th March would have to be delayed.

Volk’s Electric Railway to celebrate 140th anniversary this August

There is to be another significant anniversary celebrated on the south coast this year as it will be 140 years since the Volk’s Electric Railway opened. The Volk’s Electric Railway Association have announced the first plans for this celebration which is due to take place over the weekend of 12th and 13th August.

Whitley Bay Metro station to reopen at end of March

It has been confirmed by Nexus that the Tyne and Wear Metro station at Whitley Bay should reopen by the end of the month. It has been closed since Friday 17th February after damage to the grade II listed station canopy during Storm Otto.

In Pictures: West Midlands Metro 40 named Theresa Stewart

With Wednesday 8th March being International Women’s Day, West Midlands Metro took the opportunity to celebrate by naming Urbos100 40 Theresa Stewart. A special ceremony took place at Town Hall (in the snow!) to unveil the name on the tram – the second Urbos100 naming in the past week.

In Pictures: New cameras for Flexity2 017

Blackpool Flexity2 017 has recently been noted running with new cameras fitted in the upper windscreen at both ends. These replace the previous one end only “auto stop technology” camera which the tram has carried since they were removed from 018 in 2021, after it suffered accident damage.

Burst water main causes major NET disruption

Nottingham Express Transit has been hit my major disruption after a water main burst causing significant flooding on the tramway. The main burst close to the High Road – Central College stop on Tuesday 7th March with disruption continuing into the following day as repairs were made.

In Pictures: Trolley turning back at Beamish…

With the tramway at Beamish running on a circular route its usually the case that the only time that a trolley needs to be turned is at the depot when a tram enters service. But recent trackwork on the line has meant that sections of the route have been closed which has led to crews having to turn the trolley in service.

Metro punctuality up but still struggling

It’s a case of its better than it was but still not where it should be for the Tyne and Wear’s latest set of punctuality figures. Performance is continuing to struggle across the network with various issues combining to mean that the number of trains reported as being on time is still at a low level.

Planned operating fleet at Crich for 2023 confirmed

At least 17 passenger trams and four works cars are set to be commissioned for service at the Crich Tramway Village this year. This will include three trams planned to return to service having not been used in 2022 – and subject to testing more trams may return to service later in the year.

Prices to increase on Edinburgh Trams

Ticket prices on Edinburgh Trams will increase for the first time in around three years from Sunday 2nd April. All tickets will be affected by the increase and is in line with similar changes being introduced by Lothian Buses.

In Pictures: The trams at North East Land, Sea & Air Museums

The North East Land, Sea and Air Museums in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear is home to a collection of trams – many of which come from Blackpool having been sold following the tramway upgrade in 2011. In addition to a Centenary Car, Twin Set and Balloon Car the museum also houses a tram from Graz and one from Krefeld with all vehicles in undercover storage. Staff at the West Midlands Metro have voted for Macmillan Cancer Support to be their charity of the year for 2023 which means their fundraising efforts will be concentrated towards the organisation. This announcement comes just a few weeks after it was confirmed that the 2022 Charity of the Year, Compton Care, had received over £1,000 in donations from the company.

DLR Beckton Depot to see improvement works

The main Docklands Light Railway Depot at Beckton is set to benefit from major improvements after confirmation that Morgan Sindall Infrastructure have been appointed to deliver them ahead of the full introduction of the new CAF trains. The works will include a new maintenance building and expanding stabling capacity provided at the facility.
