Snow hits the UK again

Just when you thought it was safe to put those winter woollies away comes the snow! And pretty heavy snow at that which has caused disruption for trams in the UK – Stagecoach Supertram had to run a revised service on Friday 10th March whilst the Crich Tramway Village announced that their planned opening on Saturday 11th March would have to be delayed.

In Sheffield trams were unable to run beyond Sheffield Station towards Halfway or Herdings Park. This was down to not only the heavy snowfall but also the number of cars abandoned on the tracks. The Blue route ran a revised service roughly every 20 minutes from Sheffield Station to Malin Bridge with the Purple route completely suspended. Meanwhile the Yellow route managed to run all the way between Middlewood and Meadowhall but again only approximately every 20 minutes. The Tram-Train service as also unaffected.

While there was snow elsewhere in the UK there were no reports of changes in tram services as a result.

But there was an announcement of a change at the Crich Tramway Village. Preparations were almost ready for a reopening but heavy snowfall in the region meant that it was not safe to allow the museum to open as planned on Saturday 11th March. It was not just the museum site itself which was badly affected (it was highly unlikely trams would have been able to run if they had opened) but also the local roads which were described as only passable by tractors! Further announcements will follow as to when Crich will be able to open.
