It is the latter line which is due to open first with “late 2024” named as the planned opening date for the first phase of the line. In Pictures: Flexity2 010 back in service

With the Blackpool Tramway having operated a more reduced service throughout 2023 than had been seen previously (particularly pre-pandemic) the 18 strong fleet of Flexity2 trams has had a fair amount of spare capacity this year. This has led to some of the trams spending longer periods off the road and once of those which had not been seen in service for some time had been 010, however, it has recently returned to action.

Back in September we reported on a new advert having been applied to Edinburgh Trams 267 with it having been spotted at the depot carrying its new vinyls. Now advertising Hello Fresh the tram was still having attention at the depot at the time so it didn’t enter service but now a couple of months later that has been finished and 267 is back out on the line again.

City of Edinburgh Council give their response to Tram Inquiry Report

Just when you thought it was safe to discuss Edinburgh Trams without mention of Lord Hardie’s Inquiry Report, then the City of Edinburgh Council come along with their official response to the content. Released in September 2023 the lengthy report (which as we all know also took nine years from initial announcement to report release) determined that much of the blame for cost overruns and delays to the original tram project was down to the arms length company tie and the City of Edinburgh Council although the Scottish Government didn’t come out of it unscathed either. At the time the Council gave a brief statement but after around 6 weeks they have now had time to dissect the contents and released a report of their own in response.

Plans confirmed for temporary Birmingham Eastside terminus

It has been known for some time that plans to open the full West Midlands Metro Birmingham Eastside extension would be met with delay as works around the Curzon Street HS2 Station can not start until that project hands it over to the Midland Metro Alliance. That is not expected to be until 2026 which means there would be a significant delay to public services opening on the extension to Digbeth, when a lot of work would already have been completed. To avoid the complete line laying dormant for some time it has been decided to progress plans for a temporary terminus to allow services to begin earlier – but don’t get too excited as that earlier is in fact 2025/2026.

Nottinghamshire County Council look at options for free concessionary pass tram travel

As regular readers of this website will probably be aware ever since concessionary pass holders were given free travel on buses across the country trams have been a bit of a poor relation with government funding only covering buses. This has led to local authorities either having to fund concessionary pass holders travelling on trams out of their own budgets or not extend the offer. Nottinghamshire County Council are one such local authority and they have now announced a full review of their funding of free tram travel.
