UKTram appoint new Chair

Stephen Edwards has been appointed as the new Chair of UKTram, the organisation that represents the country’s light rail sector. Stephen joins the organisation with a successful background in strategic development, business planning and operations management, most recently as Executive Director and Director General of South Yorkshire PTE.

In Pictures: 52 completes the Urbos100 order for the West Midlands Metro

Wednesday 22nd November saw the last of the current confirmed order of CAF Urbos100 trams for the West Midlands Metro with 52 arriving at Wednesbury Depot. This concludes the delivery of all 21 in the order, a process which started on 28th April 2021 when 39 was delivered.

Metro 4001 takes to the stage – kind of!

If you went to Newcastle’s Live Theatre to see a performance of Gerry and Sewell you may have been in for a surprise as on stage there is a full-sized replica of original Metrocar 4001! Finished off in the original yellow and white livery the replica is part of the set for the play which is played at the theatre earlier in November.

Big Heritage take over running of Wirral Transport Museum

Wirral Council have confirmed that Big Heritage Community Interest Company (CIC) have officially taken over the running of the Wirral Transport Museum on a 28 year lease. Negotiations between the two parties have been ongoing for some time but have now been concluded with work now expected to start planning for the reopening of the museum.

Sting goes for a ride on the Tyne and Wear Metro

When you’re given the Freedom of North Tyneside what’s the best way to get there to collect the award? Travel on the Tyne and Wear Metro of course! That’s exactly how music legend Sting travelled (after initially heading the wrong way by getting on a train to South Shields!) to get his award from the Exchange 1856 building in North Shields.

In Pictures: 33 on test in the West Midlands

The latest tram to have been returned to Wednesbury after repairs at Dudley is now back on the road to return having started tests on the mainline. 33 has been back at Wednesbury since 11th August 2023 when it was delivered on Bilston Road and towed back to the depot and now after further attention at the depot it has been spotted undergoing tests.

New report says Tramway Terrace is repairable

From it will have to be demolished, to we’re have another survey on it, to it is repairable after all – its been a bit of a mixed month for the historic Tramway Terrace in Douglas. The latest on the latest saga in relation to heritage transport on the Isle of Man is that after an independent survey ordered by the Isle of Man Government’s Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture there is hope for the building’s future with this concluding that it is feasible for work to take place to complete repairs.

In Pictures: The forgotten Blackpool Brush Car?

With Brush Cars in the news again recently following the move of the Fylde Transport Trust’s 634 from Blackpool to the East Anglia Transport Museum we now take a look at what could be described as the forgotten Blackpool Brush Car. 626 was one of three of the single deck Railcoaches to undergo a major overhaul in the 1990s featuring some modern features but whereas the other two (630 and 631) have enjoyed a secure future since, this tram has not been so lucky.

West Midlands Metro dogs on trams trial to end – but dogs to still travel until final decision made

The Dogs on Trams pilot scheme which has allowed well behaved pet dogs to travel on West Midlands Metro services for a three month period is due to end on Wednesday 15th November. But before a final decision can be made it has been decided to allow the scheme to continue. This will also allow people to submit their feedback to be considered by West Midlands Metro ahead of a decision.

Two million Metro journeys recorded on Pop Pay As You Go

Over two million extra Tyne and Wear Metro journeys have been generated through Pop Pay As You Go according to new figures released by Nexus. With discounted single and day Metro fares available using Pop it is increasing in popularity with over 100,000 customers now having signed up generating 2.2 million trips this year.

In Pictures: Double delivery delight for the East Anglia Transport Museum

Earlier this week we reported on how the Fylde Transport Trust’s Blackpool Brush Car 634 was on its way to the East Anglia Transport Museum but if that excitement wasn’t enough it can also be reported that they have a second delivery to the museum this week. That delivery is of the lower deck of Glasgow 488 with it now being reunited with its upper deck.

Gosforth Depot sidings completed

Work on the major redevelopment/rebuild of the Tyne and Wear Metro Depot at Gosforth has hit another milestone with the completion of the final stabling sidings for the new fleet of trains currently being built by Stadler in Switzerland.
