Around the World in Trams: Stuttgart 1001

“Around the World in Trams” is staying in Stuttgart for this latest photo from outside of the British Isles.

We mentioned in last week’s article that as well as a light rail  system, the city of Stuttgart also has a rack railway which operates as part of their public transport network. This is a 1.4 mile (2.2km) line which runs on metre gauge and climbs a height of 205 metres. It opened in 1884 at which time it was steam operated and that was how it remained until 1921. It is now operated as line 10 in the public transport network and is the only urban rack railway in Germany.

This photo shows 1001 running along the line on 1st August 1991.  This vehicle was built in 1982 and continued running until 2022 when it was taken out of use as a new fleet of vehicles were introduced on the line.
