In Pictures: John Lewis advert for Edinburgh Trams 258

Six months into the year and we finally have the first new advert on Edinburgh Trams with 258 receiving vinyls for the recently refurbished John Lewis store at the St James Quarter – it may have been a while since we last saw a new ad in Edinburgh but its still in the same style with full height adverts of the third and fifth sections and only above window ads on the rest of the tram.

Preston Trampower secure listed building for HQ as plans for demonstration line continue

The Preston Trampower project – which it is hoped will eventually see a 5km operating tramway in Preston – has recently seen further progress with a listed building acquired for their new headquarters, ahead of a planned start on constructing a demonstration line this summer. Station House, in Gamull Lane, has been purchased with architects appointed to refurbish the mid-19th century building to become a new base for the company.

Late evening trackworks for Supertram

Essential track maintenance works on Stagecoach Supertram between Monday 7th and Thursday 10th June is going to see some late night service alterations on the Blue and Purple routes. The work will be taking place in Gleadless, Herdings and Birley Lane areas and will mean that there will be an earlier than usual end of service time on these nights with no replacement buses being offered.

This weekend looks set to be another big weekend for heritage trams in the UK with the Heaton Park Tramway reopening (the first normal operation since before the pandemic!) as down at the Seaton Tramway it is the 24 hour Tramathon taking place from midday on Saturday 5th June.

In Pictures: Volk’s Electric Railway returns to operation for 2021

Saturday 29th May was a busy day for heritage lines to resume operation – Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours and Snaefell Mountain Railway both ran their first services this year (and for the Snaefell line it was the first operation since 2019) as did Brighton’s Volk’s Electric Railway. Having last operated on 31st October 2020 the VER had been undergoing training and testing in the lead up to the resumption of public services which has seen two pairs of trains in operation on most days so far.

Preparatory work for tracklaying on Birmingham Eastside extension to get underway in June

With work already underway on extensions of the West Midlands Metro to Hagley Road in Edgbaston, Wolverhampton Railway Station and Brierley Hill, it has now been confirmed that the first “spades on the ground” will be seen on the Birmingham Eastside extension to Digbeth from Sunday 6th June. This will see preparatory works started to lay track along Lower Bull Street and will necessitate a closure of the road to vehicles.
