Taxi and tram collide in Manchester City Centre

Metrolink services through Manchester City Centre were disrupted on Friday 9th December after a collision between a taxi and a car close to Shudehill tramstop. The collision happened shortly after 1800 and saw no trams able to run via 1CC for around an hour and a half.

British Trams Online Tram of the Year voting now open!

Voting is now open for the British Trams Online Tram of the Year 2022! Thanks to everyone who took their time to nominate in the four categories and we are now able to confirm the trams, tramways and events which have been shortlisted in all of the categories. In many ways it has been a very challenging year to decide on the shortlists with many of the things we would have predicted would have been in the running at the start of the year not actually happening or things happening which gave us second thoughts (i.e. ordinarily the opening of an extension would mean that tramway would be almost certain to be nominated but when that tramway is the West Midlands Metro which has had one or two issues in the past year it kind of makes you think maybe not!) but we still have nominations in all categories. Council to consider more Edinburgh Trams extensions in early 2023

The City of Edinburgh Council are to discuss plans which would more than double the length of the tram network in early 2023. Plans are to be considered which could see trams running from Granton to Dalkeith – although its not a scheme which would be ready any time soon, estimates are that the first trams could run in 2032.

Metro services to resume between Pelaw and South Shields on 14th December

The return of Tyne and Wear Metro services between Pelaw and South Shields has been delayed by a further two days with confirmation that the first trains won’t now run until Wednesday 14th December. Services last ran between the two stations in September to allow for Metro Flow works to take place; originally due to be completed by Monday 5th December extra time has been needed to ensure all work is completed and tested satisfactorily.

Money raised to bring Balloon 710 back to Rigby Road

Blackpool Transport have confirmed that their online fundraiser for money to bring back Balloon 710 from Wyre Dock to Rigby Road Depot has been successful. Launched in mid-November the campaign was looking to raise £2,500 to pay for the transportation of the tram along the Fylde Coast and within a couple of weeks this has been surpassed allowing plans to be made for its move.

In Pictures: Ride the Lights returns at the East Anglia Transport Museum

The main operating season may have ended at the East Anglia Transport Museum during October but they’re back for more during December weekends in the lead-up to Christmas with the Ride the Lights event returning for 2022. The museum is offering tram, trolleybus and train rides and includes after dark operating giving a different view of the historic vehicles which make up the operating fleet.

In Pictures: Edinburgh Trams disruption after building fire

Services on the Edinburgh Trams network were temporarily suspended between West End and St Andrew Square on Wednesday 7th December after a fire in a building on South St Andrew Street. With the overhead isolated no trams were able to run along Princes Street and to St Andrew Square for about four hours whilst the fire was dealt with.

In Pictures: Winter workshop activity at Crich

The Crich Tramway Village may currently be closed to the public with trams not due to run again until Saturday 11th March 2023 but the workshops are still a hive of activity. In preparation already for next season a number of trams have seen attention in the workshops with a view to being returned to service at some point during 2023. In Pictures: Supertram 116 back in fleet livery on driver training

Not previously illustrated or even mentioned on these pages has been the return of Stagecoach Supertram’s 116 to fleet livery following the removal of its adverts for XPO Logistics. Since the vinyls were taken off it seems the tram has been mainly confined to depot but that wasn’t the case on 6th December 2022 when it was out on driver training. Photographs from Ryan Hartley.

In Pictures: West Midlands Metro terminates at The Royal

Over the weekend of 3rd-5th December, West Midlands Metro services from Edgbaston Village were terminating at The Royal to allow for maintenance works to take place on the Wisbone bridge in Wolverhampton. Services started as normal on Saturday 3rd December with the final through tram from Wolverhampton St George’s departing at 1151. A normal service resumed early morning on Monday 5th December.
