Summerlee Tramway closed

We normally report on there being two operational tramways in Scotland – one modern and one heritage. But whilst the modern tram system in Edinburgh has had positive news to report over the past month with the opening of the extension to Newhaven, there has been a less positive development at the Summerlee heritage line which is has not been running for several months with no sign of when it may return.

In Pictures: New adverts on Manchester Metrolink

We’ve seen recently that Edinburgh has had a lot of new adverts in quick succession and it looks like the bug has spread to Manchester as there have been three new adverts on Metrolink trams over the past week or so. The trams receiving these ads are 3075, 3107 and 3117.

Baton of Hope takes a ride on West Midlands Metro

West Midlands Metro have recently played a role in a campaign that aims to save lives across the country by carrying the “Baton of Hope” for a short journey on Monday 3rd July. This is part of a campaign to raise awareness of the issue of suicide and to bring a change in the approach, how we talk about it and how those affected by it are supported.

In Pictures: More new adverts in Edinburgh!

The end of June was a busy time for new adverts to be added to trams in Edinburgh. We’ve already reported on a new vinyl wrap advert for 270 (Camera Obscura) and two standard Edinburgh style ads for 261 (Scottish Rugby) and 273 (Heverlee Lager) but that’s not all as both 251 and 264 have also been spotted with new designs adorning their exterior.

New Metro train makes it to Sunderland

With each week the entry into service of the first of the Tyne and Wear Metro’s new trains edges closer with the latest milestone seeing one of the trains reach Sunderland for the first time. Whilst it will still be many months before passengers can start to enjoy the new trains this is the latest stage in preparing the trains for an entry into service.

New discounted NET ticket announced for school students

Students travelling to school for the next academic year are set to be able to enjoy discounted travel on Nottingham Express Transit after a new ticket was announced by the company. This new ticket comes after a successful trial with pupils at the George Spencer Academy in Stapleford and will now be rolled out across all Nottinghamshire schools located close to the network.

Another Metro line closure for overhead line renewal work

There will be no Tyne and Wear Metro services running between Benton and North Shields from Monday 31st July until Friday 4th August to allow for the replacement of overhead wire as part of the overall £36.4 million wire renewal programme.

Anyone with an active travel pass or valid tram ticket is set to be able to enjoy discounts from a range of Nottingham cafes, bars, shops, restaurants and more after the launch of a new scheme. “Destination Discount” will range from 25% off food to two-for-one tapas deals and money off clothes.

Additional DLR train order confirmed

The Docklands Light Railway will now be welcoming 54 new “state of the art” trains to the network in the coming years after an option for 11 additional units was confirmed by Transport for London. Funding for these extra trains comes from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) and will help to support the development of thousands of new homes and jobs.

Details announced for Metrolink Eccles line closure this summer

Manchester Metrolink have confirmed that there will be a partial closure of the Eccles line between Saturday 15th July and Thursday 21st September to allow for the replacement of rail. No trams will be able to serve either Ladywell or Eccles during this period with services terminating at Weaste instead with replacement buses and walking routes signposted.

New signalling control suite switched on at Gosforth Depot

A new multi-million pound signalling control suite has opened at the Tyne and Wear Metro’s Gosforth Depot as the countdown to the entry into service of the new train fleet continues. This new facility will be used to manage Metro train movements between the depot and the mainline and replaces an ageing control room which had technology dating back to the 1980s.

RAIB confirm NET derailment investigation

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) have confirmed that they are now undertaking a full investigation into the derailment of Nottingham Express Transit 232 at Bulwell on 12th June 2023. This incident saw the tram service disrupted for over a week due to the severity of the damage caused and with the start of the investigation further details have now emerged of what happened.
