Last month saw Acocks Green Library celebrate the 70th anniversary of the closure of Birmingham Corporation Tramway’s last routes with a special Tram Day featuring an extensive collection of model trams – and the West Midlands Metro were also on hand to help commemorate the occasion.
West Midlands Metro attended the event to give information about the expanding modern tram network and there was the chance to take away merchandise, including miniature trams, pens and other goodies.
On top of this there were several stunning displays of vintage model trams as well as original tram memorabilia, some local historical network and family craft activities.
Michael Reading-Skilton, Metro Commercial Manager, said: “When we heard about this fascinating exhibition, we were really keen to get involved. Trams have played such an important part in the history of the area, and today tens of thousands of people once again rely on them for both work and pleasure. As well as celebrating our rich tramway heritage, the exhibition has provided an ideal opportunity to reflect on how much has changed over the past seven decades, and the wealth of opportunities that will be unlocked as the Metro continues to grow over the next few years.”
A good example of an aptonym, where a person’s name corresponds to their job or situation: Mr *Reading*-Skilton involved with a library.
Talking about expanding the metro it’s 3 months since all the line was completed and midland metro can’t even give a ball park date when the wolves extension is opening.
This weekend at Wythall Transport Museum there is a celebration of BCT tram 70 – listed as Marking 70 years since the last tram ran in Birmingham, a display of trams in model form will take us back to a form of transport now making a comeback across the city.
