Details announced for Metrolink Eccles line closure this summer

Manchester Metrolink have confirmed that there will be a partial closure of the Eccles line between Saturday 15th July and Thursday 21st September to allow for the replacement of rail. No trams will be able to serve either Ladywell or Eccles during this period with services terminating at Weaste instead with replacement buses and walking routes signposted.

The engineering works will see 1.7km of rails replaced and follows on from two previously significant line closures in 2021 and 2022 as part of the maintenance of the line which first opened 22 years ago. TfGM had looked at delaying these latest works until 2024 but it was decided it was necessary this year to ensure the continued safe operation of the line.

Danny Vaughan, TfGM’s Head of Metrolink, said: “I’d like to apologise to customers for any inconvenience these works will cause. It is, however, essential to do to keep our services safe into the future. It will be the final summer of rail replacement for some years, and this year we will be running trams all the way to Weaste from the city centre, in order to minimise disruption.”

During the work a fully accessible replacement bus service will run between Weaste and Eccles via Ladywell. For those feeling energetic and able to there will also be clearly signposted routes to allow them to complete their journeys.

Trams will run as normal as far as Weaste with the MediaCityUK still fully served.
