In Pictures: More construction images from Birmingham Eastside

We recently brought you news of progress on construction and demolition work on the planned West Midlands Metro Birmingham Eastside extension with buildings having been demolished and track continuing to be laid. Trampower to continue Southwark tram route development – despite TfL concerns

Trampower are to continue to with their plans for a tram route in the London borough of Southwark – even though Transport for London have expressed their concern about the scheme. The planned route would run between London Bridge and Denmark Hill and Trampower claim that it could be built within 12 months and at reduced costs to the taxpayer.

Midland Metro Alliance gives out prizes after creative design competition

As well as constructing the West Midlands Metro extensions, the Midland Metro Alliance ae heavily involved in community engagement and as part of this they have recently handed out prizes in a special celebration event for the winners of a creative design competition it has been running with pupils from Special Education Needs and Disability (SEND) schools and Alternative Provision (AP) schools.

In Pictures: Blackpool Centenary 645 moves to Crich!

There are stories you expect and then there are stories you don’t! We think this one falls firmly in the latter category! Blackpool Centenary 645 has been donated to the National Tramway Museum at Crich where it is to be assessed with a view to becoming the second Access Tram at the museum, as well as having the benefit of being one person operated at times when there may be crew shortages.

More overhead problems for West Midlands Metro

Just a few days ago we reported on an overhead problem just to the north of Wednesbury Parkway on 13th/14th July which had led to a service change with no trams running to Wolverhampton St George’s. This was in place for around a day before services resumed (albeit on battery power in the affected area) but fast forward to Monday 17th July and there were more problems around the same area.

In Pictures: 50 into service on the West Midlands Metro

Urbsos100 50 has entered service on the West Midlands Metro. It was noted in action on Saturday 15th July 2023 and in carrying its first passengers has become the sixteenth member of this class of tram to enter service, pulling the Urbos100s level with the T69s in numbers (although soon to pull ahead with further examples currently being commissioned).

Isle of Man Government launch heritage railways consultation

The Isle of Man Government have launched an “Independent Review and Economic Impact Assessment” into the operation of the heritage railways on the island. This obviously includes the Manx Electric Railway, Snaefell Mountain Railway and Douglas Bay Horse Tramway and as part of this review they have launched an online consultation to find out views from the public.

TfL Programme and Investment Committee give update on current rail projects

If you read our recent article on the tram shortages on London Tramlink you will have seen that there had been an update to Transport for London’s Programme and Investment Committee on a programme to procure replacement trams as part of the latest report into various Rail and Station Enhancement programmes. This report didn’t only go into the tram replacement programme with a few other tram and light rail projects also mentioned.

In Pictures: Another full advert appears on Edinburgh Trams

The Edinburgh Trams fleet now has two trams which are carrying full vinyl wrap advert liveries following the application of a design for Capital Radio on 262. As with the adverts previously carried on 270 (for Breitling and now for Camera Obscuta) the full fleet livery has been replaced with the vinyls which still features two sections which cover the windows on the tram.

Pop Pay As You Go minimum top up reduced

Nexus have lowered the minimum top-up amount on the Pop Pay As You Go card following customer feedback. Users now only need to put £5 on for a top-up (the minimum used to be £10) with the hope that this will encourage even more people to switch over to start using the money saving product.

NET extends parking enforcement action at park and ride sites

Nottingham Express Transit have extended parking enforcement action to two further park and ride sites after the successful implementation at The Forest. Both Toton Lane and Wilkinson Street will now see similar action take place in a bid to ensure there is compliance with the parking regulations at these sites.

In Pictures: Another commemoration of 70 years since the end of Birmingham’s original trams

Over the weekend of Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th July the Wythall Transport Museum commemorated the 70th anniversary since Birmingham Corporation Tramways ran their last services. The weekend saw a display of model trams at the museum whilst the chance was also taken to run a couple of buses along the old tram route to Rednal via Selly Oak and Northfield. Ken Jones captured the images in this article.

In Pictures: Another look at the Wolverhampton Railway Station extension

The Wolverhampton Railway Station extension of the West Midlands Metro has been another one of those sagas on a tramway in the British Isles where it has seemed every step forward is met with about five backwards. Slated to open on many different occasions, the last of which should have been spring 2023, these are all now in the past and so we still wait to find out when trams may start running on the line with no official update having come from Transport for West Midlands or the Midland Metro Alliance for some time. Whilst we wait this article takes another look at recent developments on the extension.

One of Edinburgh’s best known model shops – Harburn Hobbies – is ideally located by the new Trams to Newhaven extension. It can be found immediately opposite the McDonald Road tramstop and after the opening of the extension they have opened their arms to the tram and embraced it with branding in their windows as Harburn Halt!
