More overhead problems for West Midlands Metro

Just a few days ago we reported on an overhead problem just to the north of Wednesbury Parkway on 13th/14th July which had led to a service change with no trams running to Wolverhampton St George’s. This was in place for around a day before services resumed (albeit on battery power in the affected area) but fast forward to Monday 17th July and there were more problems around the same area.

That previous incident had happened late on Thursday 13th July and led to engineers having to fix the overhead just to the north of Wednesbury Parkway for much of the next day. Services were able to resume during the evening on Friday 14th July, although there was a temporary speed restriction and those trams running through the area did so under battery power northbound.

Things had seemed to be getting back to normal but on Monday 17th July, 17 (which was out on driver training), brought the wires down in almost the same position leading to more service disruption. Normal services were able to resume the following day through the area.

But more work was needed on the overhead as an early end of service for the Wednesbury Parkway to Wolverhampton St George’s section was announced for both Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th July.

The area seeing works was announced as Wednesbury Parkway to Bradley Lane with the change in service being instigated from 2000 on each day. On both days the last through tram from Edgbaston Village to Wolverhampton St George’s was at 1905 and the final tram the other direction was at 2000. All subsequent services ran Edgbaston Village-Wednesbury Parkway only. Ticket acceptance was in place on National Express West Midlands bus service 79 and West Midlands Railway services during this time period.
