August a record breaking month for Edinburgh Trams

Edinburgh Trams are celebrating their busiest ever month after more than 1.2 million journeys were recorded during the month of August. With the extension to Newhaven now firmly embedded into the city’s public transport offering plus the Festival taking place along with rugby internationals at Murrayfield, more people than ever took advantage of the modern tram system to get around the area during the 31 days of August.

Broad Street finishing works to take place in Birmingham City Centre – more West Midlands Metro service changes

Just when you thought it may be safe to venture out on the West Midlands Metro and enjoy a tram ride from one end to the other comes more news of essential works meaning a revised service will be running again. We already have trams terminating at The Royal at one end of the line to allow for driver training to take place and now comes confirmation that Library will again be a terminus at the other end with works needed on Broad Street during September.

In Pictures: A wet Bank Holiday at Beamish

What is it with Bank Holidays and rain? (In fact you could ask what it is with summer 2023 and rain the way it seems to have gone over the past few months!). Sunday 27th August in the northeast of England saw heavy downpours supplemented by grey weather but that didn’t put off visitors to Beamish as it was still a bus day requiring a three tram output – although it won’t surprise you to know that it didn’t include either of the two open toppers in the fleet!

Manchester Airport line enjoys extra trams for Bank Holiday events

Saturday 26th August could well have gone down in the record books for Manchester Metrolink’s line out to the Airport as it enjoyed one of its most intensive services since the line opened to the public. With a number of high profile events taking place in the city – and with strike action affecting rail services – a revised service was operated on Metrolink which. although the core service was actually at a lower frequency than usual, also included some additional trams in operation.

Lisbon 715 becomes a film star!

We often report on various tram moves across the country (just in case you haven’t noticed) but one which went under the radar in 2022 involved a Portuguese tram which now calls the south of England its home. Lisbon 715 was the tram and its move was so that it could become a movie star with it needed to film some scenes for a new spy action thriller which has recently been released on Netflix.

Modern Electric Tramway seek to increase board members

Modern Electric Tramways – the charity who operate Seaton Tramway – are looking to strengthen their board membership to help with their continued development in the coming years. They want to increase numbers, knowledge, understanding and representation on the board and are welcoming applications from people from groups that are under-represented in the heritage railway sector, including young people, people with disabilities, people from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds and people from the LGBTQ+ community.

NET staff vote overwhelmingly in favour of strike action

GMB Union have confirmed that their members who work on Nottingham Express Transit have voted overwhelmingly in favour of taking strike action over the latest pay deal offered to them. 92% of members voted to take strike action and although dates have yet to be announced its expected they will be time to coincide with the annual Goose Fair, one of the busiest events of the year for NET.

In Pictures: Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours over the August Bank Holiday weekend

The August Bank Holiday weekend once again saw an Enhanced Weekend of operation on Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours. In the now standard pattern of five cars allocated to the hop-on, hop-off timetable with varying journeys running between Pleasure Beach and Fleetwood (including additional temporary heritage stops at Manchester Square and South Pier), the weekend saw eleven different heritage trams in action (plus one more on duty as the Shop at North Pier). David Fowler paid a visit on the Monday and some of his shots are shown in this article.

Marathon runner completes his challenge on the Tyne and Wear Metro

You’ll remember earlier this month we reported on marathon runner Ben Cook’s plan to run the entire length of the Tyne and Wear Metro for charity. The August Bank Holiday weekend was selected to complete it and he managed to run the full 63 miles over two days – in a combined time of 11 hours and 30 minutes.

105 returns to Sheffield – or at least two thirds of it does!

Stagecoach Supertram 105 – one of the original fleet of 25 trams built by Siemens-Duewag for the opening of the system in 1994 – is on its way back to operation after two thirds of the tram returned to Sheffield on Wednesday 30th August. The tram has been in Kilmarnock undergoing repairs following accident damage.

Edinburgh Trams Limited fined over pedestrian death

Edinburgh Trams Limited – operator of the Edinburgh Trams system – have been fined £240,000 after admitting a health and safety breach over the death of a pedestrian in 2018. Carlos Correa Palacio, 53, was hit by a tram at Saughton on 11th September 2018 in an accident which the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service said could have been avoided if a full risk assessment had been undertaken on the crossing.
