Around the World in Trams: Sassi-Superga D2

We have one final photo from Turin in this week’s “Around the World in Trams” but rather than the conventional tramway we feature a photo of the Sassi-Superga Tramway.

Originally opened in 1884, the Sassi-Superga Tramway is a rack tramway which operates on the 4ft 8 7/8 inches gauge for 1.9 miles between the Turin suburb of Sassi to the Basilica of Superga. It rises to 672 metres above sea level with the upper station providing views of the city with a backdrop of the Alps. It runs on third rail electric and is single track except for a passing loop. There are three intermediate stops which are available by request only.

This shows one of three motors built in 1935 for the line after its was rebuilt numbered D2.
