Unite members at Edinburgh Trams back strike action

There could be strikes on Edinburgh Trams by the end of August after Unite the Union members voted in favour of industrial action. This dispute relates to health concerns caused by the lack of time available for toilet breaks as a result of a new timetable and extended running times.

In Pictures: Supertram improvement works move to Middlewood

We have now reached the third (and final) major phase of improvement works on the Soutth Yorkshire Supertram network this summer with work now moving on to Middlewood Road. This is a long phase – starting off on Monday 12th August and continuing until Sunday 1st September – and once again demonstrates the major investment being made by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) since they took control of the network in March.

In Pictures: Blackpool Tramway runs a split service for the Airshow

The weekend of Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th August saw visitors to Blackpool turn their heads skywards as it was the return of the Airshow. Due to the opened and closed by the Red Arrows everyone is encouraged to view the spectacular from the Promenade with the Tower Headland a particularly popular vantage point. This leads to very large crowds and means that for safety reasons the tramway runs a split service.

NET colleagues get engaged at 20th anniversary celebrations

When Nottingham Express Transit celebrated their 20th anniversary earlier this year two members of staff decided they wanted to have their own anniversary in the future as they got engaged! Gary and Nicola have worked at NET for 18 and 10 years respectively and Gary decided that the 20th anniversary was a great time to cement their romance.

Tyne & Wear Metro to close South Gosforth reception

It has been announced that the reception desk at the Tyne and Wear Metro’s South Gosforth Control Centre will close permanently from Monday 12th August. The decision has been made owing to low customer footfall using this facility with the team based there now being redeployed as part of the wider Customer Relations Team.

In Pictures: Another look at the trams at the East Anglia Transport Museum

The launch into service at the East Anglia Transport Museum of Blackpool 634 at Easter may seem like a very dim and distant memory (although is only just over four months ago!) but since then the tram has settled nicely into regular use at the museum. When open the museum usually operates two trams in service and for many visits featured on these pages 634 has been one of those two. But on Sunday 4th August it was a different story as it was having a day off in the depot which allowed the two other Blackpool trams in the operating fleet to take the strain. Defibrillator donated to Crich Tramway Village

Forkers – Severn Trent’s contractors – have donated a defibrillator to the Crich Tramway Village. This vital piece of equipment can help to increase survival rates of those who suffer cardiac arrest and its installation at Crich, which being in a remote location does not have easy access to major medical facilities, will hopefully prove its worth.

In Pictures: Supertram improvement works update

With improvement works on the South Yorkshire Supertram network currently taking place around Hollinsend and at Herdings Park there is another revised service which is seeing trams not able to run all the way through on the Blue route. This has led to a shuttle service running from Gleadless Townend to Halfway and we take a look at that in service in this pictorial article as well as some more images of the works taking place.
