In Pictures: Construction progress on Moor Street Queensway, Birmingham

Moor Street Queensway in Birmingham City Centre will see trams running along it in the future as it is on the route of the Birmingham Eastside extension which will leave the current line at Bull Street and run through to Digbeth. As was first reported last month, good progress is being made on laying the tracks here with one side seeing rails on the ground and the Midland Metro Alliance team moving to the opposite carriageway. In this pictorial update Ken Jones takes a trip out to see the most recent progress.

Crich prepares to celebrate the past and future at Electric Tram Weekend

This coming weekend (Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th September) will see the annual enthusiasts event at the Crich Tramway Village – home of the National Tramway Museum – which this year will be celebrating 60 years of electric trams whilst also looking to the future with recent restoration projects set to be in service.

Although the major improvement works on South Yorkshire Supertram have now been completed for this year there will still be some further works taking place which will require service changes. The next of these will be on Sunday 15th September.

Four asked to submit bids for new vehicles for London Trams

Transport for London has asked four companies to submit full bids to design and build a new fleet of trams for the London Trams system. They are looking for 24 trams to replace the fleet of original Bombardier CR4000s with the aim that they would start to enter service in the late 2020s – as long as funding for them can be secured.

Strikes threatened on Nottingham Express Transit

Nottingham’s famous Goose Fair could be targeted again by the GMB Union with strike action on the city’s trams after members voted overwhelmingly in favour of taking action. The dispute again centres on pay with the union stating that the offer made to their members falls short of expectations.

West Midlands Metro join in at the European Tram Driver Championships

Two tram drivers from the West Midlands Metro will be joining other drivers from across Europe (including Edinburgh Trams) in competing at the prestigious European Tram Driver Championships. Being held in Frankfurt, Germany on 14th September, West Midlands Metro are sending Jasbir Kaur and Dawid Osika to the championships.

105 is back in service on the South Yorkshire Supertram after an absence of over three years. The tram made its return to passenger service on Monday 8th September when it operated on the Yellow route.

Route confirmed for The Full System Tour in Blackpool

Sunday 29th September will see the second (and final) “The Final System Tour” of the year for Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours and details of the planned route have now been revealed. It will see a heritage tram running up to North Station – the first time since the pre-opening launch tours – as well as covering all sorts of track its not always possible to travel over.

Woman who designed Metro logo recognised with prestigious award

Margaret Calvert, who in a long career in design created the iconic Tyne and Wear Metro logo amongst many others, has been honoured with a prestigious award. She was given the Type Directors Club Medal in a ceremony in New York which recognises those who have made outstanding contributions to typography.

In Pictures: Trams and trolleybuses at the Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft

If you think about trams you probably don’t immediately think about the Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft but as we’ve mentioned on these pages before it is actually home to three trams now (or at least two tram bodies and a full tram), including Blackpool Balloon 708 which is set to become the UK’s first play tram! And as trolleybuses were first known in some places as trackless trolleys they also have a bit of a place on these pages! Sunday 28th July saw the Sandtoft Gathering take place and in this article we take a look at the trams there as well as some of the trolleybuses which took place in this same event. South Yorkshire Mayor expresses delight at completion of Supertram improvement works

Oliver Coppard, Mayor of South Yorkshire, has hailed the completion of improvement works on the Supertram network with the extension works having been completed on time and on budget. £23 million was invested in the work – the first such works since the Mayoral Combined Authority took back control of the network after the ending of Stagecoach’s contract.

In Pictures: Railgrinder visits Blackpool

In days gone by most tram systems across the system had their own fleet of works vehicles which could perform a variety of tasks, often whilst most people slept no idea what maintenance work was taking place. The modern tramway is much different than that and it is usually the case that specialist equipment has to be hired in to complete tasks. And recently the Blackpool Tramway has done just that with a railgrinder on hire.

Bluebird to be launched at Crich on Friday 13th September

As the 10 year restoration project comes to an end it has been confirmed that London County Council 1 – more commonly known as Bluebird – will be launched in an event for special guests and Tramway Museum Society (TMS) members at the Crich Tramway Village on Friday 13th September 2024. All being well it is then likely that Bluebird will run in public service for the first time since 1957 over the Electric 60 Tram Weekend on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th September.
