Woman who designed Metro logo recognised with prestigious award

Margaret Calvert, who in a long career in design created the iconic Tyne and Wear Metro logo amongst many others, has been honoured with a prestigious award. She was given the Type Directors Club Medal in a ceremony in New York which recognises those who have made outstanding contributions to typography.

Margaret designed the large yellow Metro “M” cubes which can be seen outside stations, on trains and on signage within including giant wall graphics on underground Metro platforms.

Huw Lewis, Customer Services Director at Nexus, said: “Huge congratulations to Margaret Calvert on this prestigious award from the Type Directors Club.

“This is the woman who created Metro’s iconic typeface, which is at the very core of the brand. The Metro logo has become one of our region’s most iconic symbols and that was all thanks to Margaret’s work for us in the late the 1970s.

“It’s a design which has stood the test of time. Margaret’s work for Metro, both the font and the way it is used throughout the system, will be with us for many years to come.”

Midland Metro Alliance confirm commitment to sustainable practices to mark International Day of Clean Air

The Midland Metro Alliance, who are the organisation who are constructing extensions to the West Midlands Metro, have reaffirmed their commitment to play a key role in reducing carbon emissions during construction works. Their continued efforts have led to considerable progress towards an ambitious goal to significantly reduce air pollution during their construction works.

The team exceeded their carbon reduction target last year by more than 300 tonnes, making a carbon saving of 3,389 tCO2e – the equivalent of more than 400 million smartphones charged!

And that’s not all as they are already contributing to the reduction of long-term CO2 emissions by building a sustainable mode of transport, helping to reduce the negative impacts on the environment by improving air quality and reducing atmospheric pollution.

Its not just construction activity where they are helping to improve the environment. They have also adopted several innovative initiatives that have bolstered their carbon saving achievements. This has included the use of earth friendly low carbon fibre reinforcement concrete and their works to strengthen rather than replace Parkhead Viaduct in Dudley led to a 1,500 tonne carbon saving.
