Autumn opening for Wolverhampton West Midlands Metro extension?

We’ve been here before but officials at the Midlands Metro Alliance are suggesting that trams could start to run to Wolverhampton Railway Station this autumn with works now starting to reach a conclusion. Work resumed during the summer on the much delayed extension and now it seems that they are finally coming to an end.

In Pictures: Blackpool 011 receives all over advert

There are now four trams in the Blackpool Tramway core fleet of Flexity2s with vinyl wrap adverts with the latest being 011 which has received a bright design for Mazuma Mobile. The tram was officially unveiled in its new advert by boxer Jack Catterall at North Pier on Tuesday 13th September.

Metrolink performance figures finally released again

We hadn’t seen any performance figures from Manchester Metrolink since March but the TfGM website has now updated the data – covering the entire period from 12th December 2021 until 23rd July 2022 (eight of the four week periods, four from 2021/22 and four from 2022/23).

Tours of Starr Gate Depot and Mini System Tour amongst highlights of Blackpool’s Anniversary Weekend 2022

Blackpool’s Anniversary Weekend is back over the weekend of Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th September and a busy porgramme of events has been announced. Alongside everything you expect to see from similar weekends in Blackpool there will be the chance to see behind the scenes at Starr Gate Depot and there will also be a two hour Mini System Tour taking you to places you don’t usually get to travel on board the heritage trams.

Edinburgh Trams to run all night to allow people to pay their respects to the Queen

New team at Department for Transport confirmed

With a new Prime Minister in post there has also been a lot of movement in the ministerial team at the Department for Transport. Long-standing Secretary of State Grant Shapps has been removed and replaced by Anne-Marie Trevelayn whilst there are also new ministers and Under Secretary’s in place too.

Stagecoach Supertram Engineering Works: 17th & 18th September

There are to be more engineering works on the Stagecoach Supertram network throughout the weekend of Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th September. This will impact services on the Blue and Purple routes with rail replacement works due to take place in the South Street Bridge area.

New timetable on the DLR from 26th September

Passengers on the Docklands Light Railway are set to benefit from a new timetable at the end of September which will provide more frequent services, including in the evening and at weekends. The timetable will be introduced from Monday 26th September and sees changes to services between Stratford and Canary Wharf/Lewisham and Canning Town to Beckton.

Edinburgh Trams Inquiry set to cost as much as Iraq war inquiry as it still goes on

As swift and thorough investigations go the Edinburgh Trams Inquiry has been more the latter than the former and now its been reported that the costs incurred have reached the same levels as the Iraq War Inquiry – leading to yet more headlines in the Scottish press about just how much it is costing to learn the lessons of the first phase of the construction of Edinburgh Trams. The Inquiry was first called in 2014 but some eight years later it still shows no signs of coming to an end with Lord Hardie said to be taking as long as necessary to reach his conclusions.

Major Metro closure starts 12th September

The Tyne and Wear Metro will be closed between Pelaw and South Shields from Monday 12th September until Saturday 3rd December as part of the Metro Flow project which will see three sections of single line doubled to allow the service frequency to be increased and to improve reliability across the network. The 12 week closure is the biggest major line closure ever seen on the network.

In Pictures: Track goes down on Birmingham Eastside extension

Whilst the plans to extend the West Midlands Metro in various directions has not been without its problems (delays to lines opening, funding concerns leading to the splitting into phases of extensions to name but two) there is still progress continuing to be made – none more so than on the Birmingham Eastside extension which has seen the first track recently laid in front of Birmingham Coach Station.

Tramlink strikes suspended

Planned strikes due to affect London Tramlink services between 12th and 14th September have been suspended after a revised pay offer was made to drivers represented by ASLEF. Details of the pay offer have not been made public but officials at ASLEF have said it doesn’t meet the aspirations of staff but that they are willing to continue negotiations to reach a deal that both sides can agree on.
