Autumn opening for Wolverhampton West Midlands Metro extension?

We’ve been here before but officials at the Midlands Metro Alliance are suggesting that trams could start to run to Wolverhampton Railway Station this autumn with works now starting to reach a conclusion. Work resumed during the summer on the much delayed extension and now it seems that they are finally coming to an end.

We’ll go straight in with a quote from a Midland Metro Alliance spokesperson: “We are currently completing finishing works for the Wolverhampton city centre metro extension, including public realm improvements such as resurfacing and signing and lining. This activity is expected to be completed during the next few weeks. This will be followed by testing and commissioning of the new extension ready to open to Wolverhampton Railway Station during the autumn.”

The extension leaves the current line just before the Wolverhampton St George’s terminus and then runs along Piper’s Row to a new stop outside the Bus Station before it turns onto Railway Drive and then terminates outside the Railway Station. When opened services from Birmingham will alternate between running to St George’s and the Railway Station.

The 23rd September is the official start of autumn and last till the day of the winter solstice which is 21st December.

I hope MML opens this extension during Halloween

Of course, we are already in Autumn. Only a minor slippage of a couple of weeks will take us into Winter (1st December).
At least, it should start running before Blackpool’s extension to Blackpool North Railway Station!

Universally accepted dates are the meteorological seasons, namely:
1st December to last day of February is Winter.
1st March to the last day of May is Spring.
1st June to last day of August is Summer.
1st September to last day of November is Autumn.

Spring Equinox (c20 Mar) to Summer Solstice (c20 June) is Spring.
Summer Solstice (c20 June) to Autumn Equinox (c21 Sept) is Summer.
Autumn Equinox (c21 Sept) to Winter Solstice (c21 Dec) is Autumn.

This is the ancient Celtic calendar (with the names still used by Manx Gaelic speakers in the Isle of Man): –
Spring begins on 1st February (Laa yn Arree)
Summer begins on 1st May (Laa Boaldyn)
Autumn begins on 1st August (Laa Luanistyn)
Winter begins on 1st November (Laa Houney – which was also, originally, New Year’s Day).
Our ‘Quarter Days’ differ from those used in England, and fall on the 12th of the above four months (i.e., the original start of the seasons, adjusted by eleven days on account of the change from the Julian to the Gregorian Calendar in 1752).

I think we will all be in agreement that regardless if when autumn may or may not end, the chances of this extension being ready during it seem rather slim based on previous experience of lines opening recently!
