Expected to be the first up and running is that to Wolverhampton Railway Station (“Spring 2023”) with that to Dudley due to follow in 2024, the third doesn’t have an opening date (as its tied into HS2 works at Curzon Street) and is the Birmingham Eastside line which runs from Bull Street to High Street Deritend. In Pictures: The NET Reindeer names all in one article

This is the story of one man’s task to try and get photos of all the reindeer names carried on Nottingham Express Transit in December 2022/January 2023 – a task which wasn’t as easy as it sounds! As we reported earlier this week nine of the Citadis trams had received names to add to the Christmas spirit in the city and here thanks to John Whittingham we feature each one of them in photographic form.

Scottish government asked to look again at funding free travel on Edinburgh’s Trams

When the Scottish government decided to fund free travel on buses in Scotland for both under 22s and over 60s the package didn’t extend to the Edinburgh Trams system. As a result the City of Edinburgh Council decided to fund this themselves but with pressures on council budgets there was a recommendation in 2022 that this ended (although the recommendation has not, at this stage, been accepted). Now, with this debate continuing Lothian MSP Miles Briggs has called on the Scottish government to change their stance and include the trams going forward.

The new year may only be a few days old but we already have our first new tram in service for 2023 – and it’s the West Midlands Metro who have that honour with 48 being used for the first time on Wednesday 4th January. 48 was the last of the trams delivered to Wednesbury and its entry into service now means there are no new trams in the UK waiting for commissioning at the present time.

2023 should see the Edinburgh Trams network finally reach Newhaven as the second Trams to Newhaven project comes to an end with trams due to start running in service in the spring. Before we reach that milestone there remains some construction work to be completed ahead of commissioning and testing. In this latest construction update we go to the fifth floor of John Lewis to see what’s been going on around Picardy Place.

They Ran in 2022!

As we enter another year its time for one last look at which heritage trams ran in 2022. This is as a complete list of heritage trams which operated with passengers on board during the calendar year 2022 – it doesn’t include anything which has just been under test but does include trams which may only have run on a Private Hire. Inevitably we will have forgotten something so if you notice any omissions or errors please let us know (full contact details at the end of the article).

In Pictures: Reindeer descend on Nottingham Express Transit!

In the run-up to Christmas 2022 some of the trams in Nottingham underwent a little bit of a makeover as they got new identities – some of Santa’s reindeer! Its not unusual to see reindeer on UK tramways with both Edinburgh Trams and West Midlands Metro having previously named their trams for the festive season (plus antlers in Edinburgh!) but this time round it was Nottingham Express Transit who got the names out – and the trams also received antlers and noses, including a red nose for a certain Rudolph the red nosed reindeer!

The race is on! Will 2023 see three new tram extensions finally open?

If you like covering new track on UK tramways then 2023 could be a very exciting year for you as after many twists and turns we could see three separate tramways opening new sections of line! For all three they are much delayed (if you go with original timescales) but there are signs that they may be running within the next 12 months – but will we get the full hattrick of extensions and when may we see trams running?
