Picture in Time: South Yorkshire Supertram 01

Its been quite some time since we went into the modern tram archives as part of “Picture in Time” so we remedy that today as we start to take a look at a series of images taken in 1995 on the South Yorkshire Supertram system.

Over the next seven weeks or so we will be taking a look at some of the Siemens-Duewag built trams which have been the mainstay of the Supertram fleet ever since the first services started to run in 1994. 25 of the trams were built for Supertram and all were delivered in a plain two tone grey livery. To start with they had a simple two digit number (it wasn’t until Stagecoach took control that the leading “1” was added to their numbers) which was displayed on the tram ends just below the original Supertram logo. All trams were also fitted with roller blinds as new.

The below image was taken on 9th March 1995 and features the lowest numbered tram, 01, as it passes the C&A store with a service to Meadowhall. The C&A store would close in 2000 to be replaced by a Primark which has also now closed with an Easy Hotel located in part of the building. 01 was the seventh of the trams to arrive in Sheffield with its delivery being at the start of November 1993.
