Pop Pay As You Go to give cheapest Metro fares in 2023

If you want the cheapest available fares when travelling on the Tyne and Wear Metro network this year then Nexus are recommending you use Pop Pay As You Go as this will be the only way to take advantage of the fare cap. Nexus are introducing a £2 fare cap on single tickets and £4 on all day travel to match the government funded scheme on local buses across the country.

Pop Pay As You Go can be taken advantage of either by using the free smartcard or through Google Pay on Android smartphones. The fare cap has been in place since 2nd January but only applies to tickets purchased through the above methods – paper tickets will still cost the standard amount.

Huw Lewis, Nexus Customer Services Director, said: “If you don’t want to pay more for Metro travel in 2023 then it’s really easy – switch to Pop Pay As You Go, or get the Google Pay option if you’re on an Android smartphone. We strongly encourage customers to think about making the switch to ensure that they take advantage of the biggest savings we have on offer. From January 2 all single journeys on pay as you go will be capped £2, and all-day travel will be capped at £4. All you need to do is download the Google Pay app or apply for a Pop card on the Nexus website to enjoy the benefits of the fare cap.”

The £2 cap gives n adult a saving of up to 38% on a single journey with an all-zone single ticket costing £3.25 when using Pop. The daily cap on all-zone travel is also reduced by 85p from its previous level of £4.85.

The offer is only being offered through the smartcard option to try and persuade more people to transfer to Pop and to reduce printing ticket costs.
