Metro drivers get a drive of new Stadler trains in Czech Republic

Eight Tyne and Wear Metro drivers have got their first taste of the new Stadler built trains on a trip to the Czech Republic where the first of the 46 trains are currently being put through their paces. The experienced drivers are part of the Metro Futures Traincrew Specialist Team and are the first to get behind the controls of the trains having already experienced the feel on a new simulator back in northeast England.

In Pictures: Maintenance works at Dudley Street on West Midlands Metro

Over the past few weeks there has been some maintenance work taking place on the track at the West Midlands Metro stop at Dudley Street. A number of stops on the network have had a 5kph speed restriction of a while and presumably in order to solve this work has now started at Dudley Street (with Dartmouth Street also seeing similar works).

Get planning! Full details announced for the Isle of Man Year of the Railways 2023!

As we know 2023 is set to be an exciting year on the Isle of Man with it being marketed as “Year of the Railways 2023” to help celebrate 150 years of the Steam Railway and 130 years of the Manx Electric Railway. Events taking place throughout the year have already been teased but now full details have been announced of what is planned – with a full week in July plus special events at the start of July for the Steam Railway and September for the MER.

In Pictures: Overhead wires go up to connect the old and the new in Edinburgh

This week has seen service on Edinburgh Trams terminated short of the city centre again but once again there is a good (and quite exciting!) reason for it – the installation of the last of the overhead wires on the Trams to Newhaven extension which will see the original line in York Place connected up. Once this work is completed it will be possible for tram testing to get underway ahead of the start of public services.

In Pictures: Work taking place in Wolverhampton

We reported earlier this year that finally there seemed to be an end in sight for construction work on the Wolverhampton Railway Station West Midlands Metro extension with a final period of works due to get underway. There’s no doubt its been a very protracted affair but with Midland Metro Alliance contractors on site there is now evidence that there is a concerted effort to finally complete the work.

Free tram travel to be offered to Fire and Rescue Service personnel in Edinburgh

Fire and Rescue Service personnel are being offered free tram travel to allow them to pay their respects to a fellow firefighter who tragically lost his life in the line of duty last month in Edinburgh. Barry Martin was critically injured during a blaze at the Jenners building and died in hospital a few days later.

Birmingham Eastside extension takes a step forward with demolition work

Work to demolish a building, which will allow further construction work to take place on the West Midlands Metro Birmingham Eastside extension, has been making good progress in recent works. The Kings Parade site in Dale End was home to a McDonald’s before it closed in 2021 and has since been empty with it in the way of the path of the tramway which requires its demolition.

Delays from other road users in focus at UKTram

Members of the UKTram Executive Group have agreed to share best practice on measures that they are taking to cut down on delays to services caused by other road users as part of the continued collaborative working between different operating companies across the country. Its hoped that this sharing of knowledge will hep to improve reliability and reduce costs by targeting  disruption that’s been caused by factors outside of their control.

In Pictures: Full advert for Edinburgh Trams 270

Since the end of 2016 we have become used to advertising liveries on Edinburgh Trams consisting of full height vinyls on two of the seven sections of the tram with the other parts just having an advert above the windows. But that pattern has now been ended as the latest advert – on 270 – is the first true all over advert with all traces of standard fleet livery having been removed in favour of vinyls for Breitling.

The winners of Nexus’ National Pottery Day competition have gone on display at Longbenton station on the Tyne and Wear Metro. One winner and three runners-up are now on display at the station which has more than one million passengers travel through it every year.

First new DLR train enjoys a visit from the Mayor

The first of a planned 54 new walk-through trains for the Docklands Light Railway has been delivered to Beckton Depot and has already been treated to a visit for Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. The train has been built by CAF and carries the number 201 (confirming the numbering sequence) and will start overnight testing in the coming months ahead of an entry into service, probably in 2024.
