More funding to be made available for Edinburgh Trams Inquiry

Will it ever end? That’s the question being asked of the Edinburgh Trams Inquiry after it was announced that an additional £500,000 is being made available as part of the Scottish Budget brining potential costs up to £12.5 million. The far reaching inquiry – which was due to reach its conclusions quickly to help inform decisions for any future extensions was first announced in 2014 and it has now been three and a half years since the public hearings came to an end. And yet there still seems to be no signs of it ending.

Woman dies after being hit by tram on Metrolink

A woman aged in her 30s has sadly died after being hit by a tram close to the Droylsden tramstop on Manchester Metrolink’s East Manchester Line. The woman was struck by the tram at around 2000 on Friday 17th December and was pronounced dead at the scene after a large emergency services presence. No tram services ran between Piccadilly and Ashton-under-Lyne for several hours whilst the incident was dealt with. An investigation into the incident is now underway.

In Pictures: Southampton 57 to be moved

Southampton 57 – the “other” Southampton tram – is about to go on the move with the tram expected to leave its long-term storage home of the Hampshire Cultural Services at Chilcomb near Winchester to further storage in Romsey. This was the tram which started off tram preservation in the city but as time has gone on it has been superseded by work on fellow discoveries Southampton cars 11 and 38.

Punctuality and reliability falls on Metrolink

The now quarterly release of performance statistics on Manchester Merolink has shown that from the high of period 6 (ending mid-September) the last three four week periods (taking us from 19th September to 11th December) have seen a fall in both punctuality and reliability – with some lines seemingly hitting new lows of punctuality in particular.

Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year

As we reach the end of another year we wish all readers of British Trams Online a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. With it having been another year which has been “unlike any other” I’m not going to give a review of what has happened over the past 12 months as we all know there have been some challenges but in spite of that there has still been plenty to keep the website regularly updated. This is only possible thanks to the generosity of those who send information and photos in so a big thank you to everyone who has supplied us with anything over the past year and of course thank you to everyone who reads and views the site – without you doing that there wouldn’t be much point in any of it!
