Telford Steam Railway launch appeal to return steam tram to use

The Telford Steam Railway have launched an appeal to raise funds which will return their narrow gauge steam tram engine to use. It last ran in 2019 after its vertical boiler was condemned and now funding is needed to replace this as well as give some much needed attention to the carriage.

Blackpool 166 returns to service at Crich

And the trams still keep on entering service at the Crich Tramway Village! The latest tram to run for the first time this year is Blackpool Toastrack 166. Whereas most of the others we have been reporting on as entering service ran last year its been longer since this particular tramcar operated with it not having carried passengers since 2019.

Very Light Rail track installed in Coventry for testing

A short section of the unique track system being developed for the Coventry Very Light Rail scheme has been installed at Coventry City Council’s Whitley Depot. This is said to be a significant step forward for the project and the performance of the track will now be measured under extreme conditions.

Nexus help out at Beamish again

Tyne and Wear Metro engineers have been helping out at Beamish with overhead line repairs as part of an annual Nexus volunteer day. The staff were on hand to help the museum prepare for the main summer season with repairs undertaken on the overhead to make sure its all in the best possible shape for the continued operation of the trams.

In Pictures: 53 on driver training after commissioning completed

The highest numbered tram on the West Midlands Metro is edging closer to entering service with 53 having completed its mileage accumulation and testing. Its now been handed over to the operational team and although its not yet been seen in passenger service it has been noted in use on driver training.

New Metro trains to be fitted with defibrillators

Every single drivers cab in the new fleet of Tyne and Wear Metro trains is to be fitted with a life-saving defibrillator, Nexus have confirmed. That means each train will have two of the devices on-board (a total of 92 across the fleet) with this just one of many ways they will be revolutionising public transport across Tyne and Wear.

In Pictures: Beamish Steam Fair 2023

Over the years one of the most popular general transport events in the UK has been the Great North Steam Fair at Beamish. Before the pandemic this used to be a four day event which not only included the best steam traction around but also various other road vehicles. In the current climate this has now become a slightly smaller scale event (although still a significant event nonetheless) lasting for two days with the 2023 event taking place on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd April.

They do once you start you can’t stop and that certainly seems to be the case for all over adverts on Manchester Metrolink as following quickly on from the adverts we reported about last week on 3031, 3038 and 3080 comes a further two. Trams to go on parade for King’s Coronation in Blackpool – tickets now available!

For the second major royal celebration in a row, Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours are to mark the occasion by having a parade of trams. Taking place on Sunday 7th May, 11 tram will be involved and tickets are available to travel on seven of them now!

1 year countdown starts for public control for Supertram

March 2024 will be a key month for the South Yorkshire Supertram system as it will see the network come under public control again following the conclusion of the contract with Stagecoach. With this just a year away, the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority are starting a countdown in what they consider to be a key milestone in their ambitions to upgrade Supertram as part of a fully integrated public transport.
