West Midlands Metro to Wolverhampton Railway Station to open on Sunday!

Its been a long time coming – some may say a very long time coming! – but Sunday 17th September is set to see the West Midlands Metro extension to Wolverhampton Railway Station open to the public for the first time. The news comes as driver training is declared a success and all the infrastructure is working as expected.

New unlimited day travel for young people in the northeast launched

Young people who are aged 21 and under across Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and Durham can now travel all day by bus, Tyne and Wear Metro and the Shields Ferry for just £3. This is thanks to a new ticket which has been funded through the region’s Bus Service Improvement Plan.

In Pictures: Manx Electric Railway celebrates 130 years of operation

On 7th September 1893 the Manx Electric Railway (or Douglas and Laxey Coast Electric Tramway as it was then) ran its first public services between Derby Castle in Douglas to Groudle. As we know over the years this line was gradually extended north to Laxey and then on to Ramsey and although there have been years of turmoil and threats over its very future it has remained running to allow it to celebrate its 130th anniversary this year. Whilst the main events to celebrate took place during July events week, the Sunday closest to the actual anniversary also saw more celebrations to mark milestone.

NET sees a fall in reliability and punctuality

September is one of the months in the year that the Greater Nottingham Light Rail Transport Advisory Committee meet and when they do they take a look at a report from Tramlink Nottingham about how Nottingham Express Transit has been operating since the last meeting. The committee meet on 12th September and the latest report shows that there has been a fall in both reliability and punctuality but with several high profile issues affecting the network this is probably not the biggest surprise.

Programme announced for Crich’s Tram Weekend

This coming weekend (Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th September) will see the annual enthusiast event at the Crich Tramway Village. Extended from one day to two, Tram Day naturally becomes Tram Weekend and the usual mix of trams in service and displays of trams – both operational and non-operational – for photos will be on offer.

The rest of Supertram 105 back in Sheffield

We brought you the news that at the end of August two thirds of Stagecoach Supertram 105 had returned to Sheffield after repairs in Scotland and its now been confirmed that the remaining section of the tram is also now back at Nunnery Square Depot.

Each year the Tramway Museum Society – who own and operate the National Tramway Museum at Crich Tramway Village – appoint a President who officiates at special events and attend meetings which help to guide the direction of the Society. In Pictures: Latest from Blackpool North Station tramway terminus

Ah, Blackpool and its short extension up Talbot Road to a new terminus close to Blackpool North Railway Station. Its provided us with plenty of column inches over the past several years as we see some progress and then frustration as outside factors keep delaying the start of tramway services. With no sign of when trams may be able to start running – delays in the construction of the hotel look set to delay this until sometime next year – this latest pictorial article takes a look at things around the new tram terminus.

ORR praise heritage tramways engagement on renewed focus on safety

Dr Lindsey Smith, HM Inspector of Railways at the Office of Road and Rail, has praised the light rail heritage sector for their willingness to engage with regulators on enhancing safety processes and risk management. Regular followers of heritage tramways in the UK will have noticed a renewed focus on heritage tramways in the past years and Dr Smith made her comments when attending a meeting of the UKTram Heritage Committee.

The Department for Transport have released their latest tram and light rail statistics which show the number of passenger journeys made on English tram and light rail systems and it is another positive picture as there continues to be an increase in the figures – although systems have still not reached the same levels as they enjoyed before the pandemic severely impacted everything.

Stourbridge Shuttle reaches 7 million passengers

The UK’s current only example of Very Light Rail is celebrating carrying its seven millionth passenger since it started operating in 2009. The Stourbridge Shuttle is thought to be the shortest passenger transit route in Europe at 0.8 miles long and the new look shuttle service was introduced 14 years ago to save costs and allow the continued operation of this vital feeder route.
