New unlimited day travel for young people in the northeast launched

Young people who are aged 21 and under across Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and Durham can now travel all day by bus, Tyne and Wear Metro and the Shields Ferry for just £3. This is thanks to a new ticket which has been funded through the region’s Bus Service Improvement Plan.

Its hoped that this new ticket – which gives unlimited travel on a single day for £3 and builds on the success of the £1 single fare for all regional bus journeys launched in May – will make it much easier and cheaper for young people in the region to access training and educational opportunities as well as getting to and from work and leisure destinations.

The £3 ticket will also be available to purchase from Metro ticket machines.

Cllr Martin Gannon, Chair of the North East Joint Transport Committee, said: ““I’m delighted that the Joint Transport Committee is able to launch another great deal for young people aged 21 and under, with a new £3 fare offering unlimited bus, Metro and Shields Ferry travel across the whole of the North East.

“The existing £1 single fares are already making public transport more affordable for thousands of young people across the region – more than 3 million journeys have taken place so far – and this unlimited £3 day ticket is the icing on the cake. For many of our young residents this initiative is life-changing, making it much easier to travel sustainably and affordably to jobs, education and leisure activities throughout our region. As many families as well as young people are facing financial challenges at the moment, we are delighted to be able to help by bringing down the cost of travel.”
