Picture in Time: Croydon Tramlink 2542

Having spent the past few weeks looking at the construction of Croydon Tramlink this week “Picture in Time” moves beyond that work and features the system after it started to operate.

The below photo was taken on 31st March 2000 and shows 2542 running on the reserved track section of George Street with a service to Beckenham Junction. At this time that was route 2 and ran around the central Croydon loop. This tram was one of the first to receive an all over advert with it featuring vinyls for Amey, who were involved in the building of the line. An incredibly simple advert featuring yellow vinyls along with the Amey logo and details of what the company did, it was first applied to the tram in October 1999 and remained in place for two years until October 2001.
