Around the World in Trams: Rio de Janeiro 124

In this article we take another look at one of the Alstom Citadis trams which operate on the modern light rail system in Rio de Janeiro.

Looking through the trees here we see 124 in service on 14th February 2019. These Alstom Citadis 402 trams were built in La Rochelle, France (the first five only) and Taubate, Sao Paulo (the remaining 27). Although fitted with pantographs these are only used around the depots with the entire 15km route having no overhead fitted. For 80% of the route Alstom had installed its ground-level power supply system (APS) with the remainder of the route being powered by an on-board supercapacitor based energy storage.
