Metro extension works move on to Five Ways

It may have taken the best part of 20 years but work on major extensions of the West Midlands Metro network is now well underway with new lines at both ends of the currently line in progress and further lines having got the go-ahead for the future. The next extension due to open will be the Birmingham Westside line which will continue on from the terminus at Grand Central.

Phase one of this extension to Centenary Square is due to open at the end of this year but there will be a second phase through to Edgbaston – which should be up and running in 2021.

In conjunction with this major work has now commenced at Five Ways underpass which has seen this closed to all traffic for the duration of the work with it not due to be reopened until 2021 when all work is concluded. The roundabout which is above the underpass will remain open throughout but it is still expected that there will be major traffic congestion during this period.

The advice in the local area is to plan ahead and to allow extra time for journeys. It is also suggested people travel off peak or consider using public transport although the overwhelming message is that however you travel it is likely to see delays especially at busy times.
