Nottingham Community Heroes announced – both to see their names on a tram

After a contest run by the Nottingham Post the new Nottingham Express Transit Community Heroes have been named – and for the first time there are two of them, both of whom will see their names adorning the side of a tram running on the tram network. Benjamin Rosser and Bill Chambers have both been recognised for their works in the local community and will now have the honour of a tram named after them – 222 is the designated Community Hero tram.

Supertram 105 heads off for repairs

Stagecoach Supertram Siemens-Duewag constructed tram 105 has left Nunnery Depot for Scotland for repairs to take place to accident damage suffered on 23rd July 2021. The tram has been stored at the depot since that accident whilst decisions were made on whether to repair the significant damage suffered by the tram but with all that now decided upon it was time for it head off to its third different country since being built in Germany!

New YouTube channel to give unique behind the scenes coverage of the new Metro train fleet

“That Metro Guy” is the name of a new YouTube channel which will give a unique perspective of the new fleet of trains being built by Stadler for the Tyne and Wear Metro. Craig Pearson will be video blogging at key moments on the drivers’ journey to the new trains as the £362 million project takes shape over the coming years.

Trams start testing on Talbot Road!

After all the talk of delays (and let’s be honest there have been a lot!) the night of Wednesday 16th March 2022 will go do in the history books as the very first trams ran along the Blackpool Tramway Talbot Road extension all the way up to the former Wilko’s site. This marks the first tentative steps towards public services starting – although we still wait for confirmation of just when that may be.

Tuesday 15th March 2022 saw the Manx Electric Railway start operation for another season – its 129th! The three car timetable B was in use on the first day with two Tunnel Cars and a Winter Saloon all running – in three very different liveries to add a splash of colour to the Manx countryside!

New ticket offer allows you to travel from Dundee to Edinburgh Airport – for almost the same price as from Edinburgh City Centre!

Anyone travelling from Dundee to Edinburgh Airport will be able to benefit from a new joint ticket which will allow them to travel by electric bus and then tram all the way. Ember bus services from Dundee currently serve Ingliston Park and Ride and now all anyone has to do to get to the Airport is get off the bus and hop on the tram for no extra cost.

New Metro Ticket Zones to be introduced from 28th March

The new fares structure on the West Midlands Metro is to be introduced from Monday 28th March. Announced earlier this year “Metro Ticket Zones” will see the current network split into four zones and is said to be an easy to understand system giving more flexibility as it won’t be necessary to specify which stops you are travelling between. But probably the key message from WMM are giving on this is that the majority of journeys will now reduce in price or will see no increase to current tickets (although some journeys will go up).

No trams to Ashton and all city centre services via 2CC as Metrolink works take place

There will be major changes for Manchester Metrolink services for a week starting on Sunday 20th March with rail replacement works due to take place at Piccadilly Station and in Piccadilly Gardens outside Primark. Between 20th and 26th March there will be no service at all on the Ashton line whilst the original city crossing will be closed seeing trams which usually travel that way being diverted via 2CC.

In Pictures: Work continues in Edinburgh

The Trams to Newhaven project in Edinburgh has so far seen more than 65% of all track laid (that’s 3.1km), over 85% of utility diversions completed and the stops at Constitution Street, McDonald Road and Ocean Terminal all finished as work to extend the Edinburgh Trams system continues ahead of its spring 2023 opening date. As we return to view the works we head to the city end of the line to see what has been happening over the past week or so in York Place and at Picardy Place.

Pay As You Go Metro travel now available on Android phones

Passengers who travel on the Tyne and Wear Metro now have another way of making payments with Google Pay an option thanks to a new collaboration. People can now load a Pop card into Google Play on their smartphone, and then use it to touch in and out of the Metro system, in the same way they use a Pop card.

Welcome to the 2022 season at Crich!

Saturday 12th March was the first operating day of the 2022 season at the Crich Tramway Village with a standard three tram service running. The chosen three were two Leeds trams – 345 and 399 – along with Liverpool 869 and judging by photos and footage on the Crich Tramway Village Facebook page there were a healthy number of visitors who had been starved of tram action in the Derbyshire countryside!

Gateshead based company start work on key parts for new Metro train fleet

Turbo Power Systems (TPS), based on the Team Valley, have started work on key components for the new Tyne and Wear Metro train fleet. The company are producing electric converters for the 46 new trains as part of Nexus’ aim to support the local economy in the construction of these new trains.
