New YouTube channel to give unique behind the scenes coverage of the new Metro train fleet

“That Metro Guy” is the name of a new YouTube channel which will give a unique perspective of the new fleet of trains being built by Stadler for the Tyne and Wear Metro. Craig Pearson will be video blogging at key moments on the drivers’ journey to the new trains as the £362 million project takes shape over the coming years.

Craig, 39, has been a driver on the Tyne and Wear Metro for nine years and this new series of videos will show various stages of testing process, including over in the Czech Republic later this year before the first train arrives in the northeast in November 2022.

Craig said: ““I’m really excited to take on this new role, showcasing our new trains and new depot as they start to take shape. It’s a historic project for the Tyne and Wear Metro and I am honoured to be playing such a key role. I really hope that people will get enjoyment from the videos that we shoot, a real behind the scenes look at the work going on to chart the progress of this massive project, which is going to transform Metro for customers and staff.

“It will be great to see all of our hard work across the project come to fruition and have the new finished train to actually drive. The team will be going out to the Czech Republic later this year to test and commission the first two units and then returning to see the delivery of the first unit in the UK in November. That will begin months of heavy testing and commissioning on the Metro Network to get the trains ready and all signed off for the first unit entering passenger service in mid-2023.”

46 new trains are being built by Stadler in Switzerland. The first bodyshell has now been completed and further progress is now being made on the fitting out. It is planned that the first will arrive on the Metro in November 2022 before it enters service during 2023. All 46 trains should be in service by the end of 2024.
