Supertram 105 heads off for repairs

Stagecoach Supertram Siemens-Duewag constructed tram 105 has left Nunnery Depot for Scotland for repairs to take place to accident damage suffered on 23rd July 2021. The tram has been stored at the depot since that accident whilst decisions were made on whether to repair the significant damage suffered by the tram but with all that now decided upon it was time for it head off to its third different country since being built in Germany!

Casting our minds back to 23rd July 2021 and 105 was working on the Yellow route to Meadowhall when it was hit by a lorry as it was crossing Bernard Road close to Hyde Park. The junction with the road is signalled but a lorry operated by Bradwell Skips struck the tram causing a derailment and significant damage to the tram and a woman in her 20s was taken to hospital with minor injuries. A 60 year old man from Sheffield was confirmed as being reported for failing to stop at a traffic signal, driving without due care and attention and driving with an insecure load.

After recovery the tram was returned the relatively short distance to Nunnery Depot with the damage being protected by tarpaulins. It has since remained in storage at the depot for a decision on its future.

This has now been made and it is planned for the tram to be repaired and returned to service. Fast forward to 14th March 2022 and Allelys were contracted to pick-up the tram to take it to Scotland for repairs. The tram has been transported in two parts – the first two sections leaving on 14th March and the remaining section on 15th March.

The tram will be away from Sheffield for some time with its return not expected until 2023.
